About this event

Sree Pariyanampatta Bhagavathi Temple is a historic Devi temple at Kattukulam in Palakkad district, associated with the religious traditions of the former Valluvanad region. Dedicated to Bhagavathi, the temple is traditionally regarded as the Goddess of the fourteen desams, reflecting its longstanding importance within the surrounding cultural landscape. The temple’s own official website describes the shrine as believed to be around 1,400 years old and notes that its Devi prathishta has distinctive features compared with other Bhagavathi temples in Kerala. The temple complex is also described as having architectural and ritual similarities with the Mookambika Temple at Kollur. Pariyanampatta is particularly known for its annual Pooram, one of the principal festivals observed at the temple. The celebrations are accompanied by a series of temple rituals and cultural traditions, with the festival period featuring processions, traditional percussion, ritual performances and devotional observances. Among the distinctive traditions associated with the temple are Tholppavakoothu, the traditional shadow-puppet theatre based on episodes from the Ramayana, and Kalampattu, a ritual form involving the creation of elaborate devotional drawings and accompanying songs. The temple’s official festival listings also include Uchaaral Vela, Vishuvela, Dewaswom Paana, Dewaswom Chandattam, Laksharchana, Aanayoott, Niraputhiri, Navaratri Mahotsavam and Karthika Vilakku among its important observances. During the Pooram season, the temple precincts become a centre of ritual and cultural activity, with traditional art forms and processions contributing to the character of the celebrations. The festival programme can include ceremonial elephant processions, Panchavadyam, Kalampattu, Tholppavakoothu and other performances, although the exact programme varies by year. The temple also maintains specific worship and visitor practices. Its official website states that photography is strictly prohibited within the temple and that modern dress is not permitted; traditional dress requirements apply to devotees entering the temple. Daily worship follows morning and evening sessions, with the temple traditionally opening at 5:00 am and again at 5:00 pm, subject to changes for festival and special-ritual schedules. With its long religious tradition, distinctive Devi worship, ritual arts and annual Pooram, Sree Pariyanampatta Bhagavathi Temple remains an important temple and cultural landmark of the Palakkad region.
