About this event

Chottanikkara Pongala is a traditional offering observed as part of the annual festival at the Chottanikkara Bhagavathy Temple in Ernakulam district. The temple, one of Kerala’s prominent Devi pilgrimage centres, dates back to the 10th century and is dedicated to Goddess Rajarajeshwari, who is worshipped in different forms during the day as Saraswathi in the morning, Lakshmi at noon and Durga in the evening. The annual festival is held in the Malayalam month of Kumbham, generally during February or March, and includes special poojas, offerings, cultural programmes, traditional music and temple rituals. Pongala is one of the important observances associated with the festival and is particularly notable for the participation of women devotees. On the day of Pongala, women prepare the offering in earthen pots, traditionally cooking rice into a sweet porridge with ingredients including jaggery and coconut. The offering is prepared in the open spaces around the temple, with the gathering extending beyond the immediate temple premises to public roads when large numbers of devotees participate. Kerala Tourism records that thousands of women from Kerala and other parts of India have taken part in the Pongala observance at Chottanikkara, making it a significant collective expression of devotion. The offering is prepared as part of the worship of the goddess, and devotees seek her blessings through the ritual. Chottanikkara is also strongly associated with devotional traditions concerning healing and protection, with longstanding belief in the goddess’s power to provide relief from mental distress. These beliefs form part of the temple’s religious tradition and should be understood within its devotional context. The wider annual festival begins with flag hoisting and concludes with Arattu, and features religious ceremonies, traditional performing arts, music, processions and other temple activities. The Pongala observance adds a distinctive community dimension to these celebrations, as rows of earthen pots and cooking hearths occupy the surrounding areas during the ritual. Chottanikkara Pongala is therefore best understood as a temple festival observance rather than a standalone festival, reflecting the enduring ritual traditions, collective worship and cultural practices associated with one of Kerala’s major Bhagavathy temples. The observance is an established part of the Chottanikkara festival tradition.
