About this event

Vishukkani is an important Vishu observance at Kulathupuzha Sree Sastha Temple in Kulathupuzha, within Pathanapuram Taluk of Kollam district. The temple is dedicated to Lord Ayyappa in the form of Bala Sastha and is recognised as one of Kerala’s 108 Sastha shrines. Located on the banks of the Kulathupuzha River and surrounded by the forested landscape of eastern Kollam, the shrine becomes an important centre of pilgrimage during its Vishu Mahotsavam, which is identified by the official Sabarimala website as the temple’s important festival during April–May. Vishukkani is the traditional Vishu practice of seeing an auspicious arrangement of objects as the first sight of the day. The arrangement commonly includes rice, fruits, vegetables, flowers, a mirror, gold or other symbols of prosperity, and an image of the deity, with the display illuminated by traditional lamps. The ritual expresses hopes for prosperity, well-being and auspiciousness in the year ahead and forms an important part of Kerala’s Vishu traditions. At Kulathupuzha, the Vishu observance takes place within the wider festival calendar of the Bala Sastha temple. The temple’s official information records the annual Tiruvutsavam from the fifth to the fourteenth day of Medam, while the Vishu Mahotsavam is identified as a major festival during April and May. The shrine’s riverside setting and traditional Kerala temple architecture add to the character of the pilgrimage experience. A distinctive feature of the temple is its pond, where devotees traditionally feed fish regarded as belonging to the deity; fishing is strictly prohibited. The temple is also situated within the eastern Kollam forest landscape, giving the Vishu observance a setting markedly different from urban celebrations. Devotees visiting during Vishu participate in the temple’s scheduled worship and festival observances according to the rituals prescribed by the temple authorities. The wider celebration may include processions and other ceremonial activities associated with the Vishu Mahotsavam, although the exact programme varies according to the annual schedule. Visitors interested in Kerala’s religious traditions can experience Vishukkani here as part of a living temple observance rather than simply as a cultural display. As an active place of worship, the temple requires visitors to respect its customs, dress appropriately and follow instructions concerning entry and participation. The combination of Vishu traditions, Sastha worship, riverside surroundings and forested landscape makes the Kulathupuzha observance a distinctive expression of Kerala’s seasonal religious heritage.
