About this event

Ottanthullal is one of Kerala’s distinctive solo dance-theatre traditions, combining verse narration, expressive movement, music, humour and satire. Introduced in the 18th century by the celebrated Malayalam poet Kunchan Nambiar, Thullal developed as a performance form that communicated literary and mythological narratives in accessible Malayalam, while also allowing scope for humour, social observation and audience interaction. Kerala Tourism identifies Ottan Thullal as the most popular of the three Thullal forms, the others being Seethankan Thullal and Parayan Thullal. Each form differs in costume, tempo, metre and aspects of musical presentation, with Ottan Thullal distinguished by its comparatively fast rhythm and energetic style. A recital in the Sooranad area offers an opportunity to encounter this living performance tradition in the cultural setting of southern Kerala, where Thullal is among the traditional arts presented at temple and regional festivals. The performer appears in a stylised costume and makeup and presents verses through codified movements, footwork, gestures and facial expressions. The performance is not simply a dance presentation: it combines recitation, acting and movement, with the performer often incorporating spontaneous dialogue and responding directly to the audience. Thullal texts are written in Malayalam and are generally based on episodes from Hindu epics, while their satirical treatment can connect traditional stories with contemporary social situations. Musical accompaniment traditionally includes a singer or accompanying artist who repeats the verses, together with percussion and cymbals; Kerala Tourism lists mridangam, historically thoppi maddalam, and cymbals among the instruments used, with edakka also incorporated in later practice. The art form’s humour and simplicity helped it reach audiences beyond the more formal temple performance traditions of its period, and its combination of entertainment and social commentary remains central to its character. Kunchan Nambiar’s legacy continues to be preserved at Kunchan Smarakam in Killikkurissimangalam, Lakkidi, Palakkad, his birthplace, where the Government of Kerala maintains a memorial with facilities for Thullal training and performances. Thullal is also taught at institutions dedicated to Kerala’s performing arts, helping sustain the repertoire and techniques for new generations. An Ottanthullal presentation in Sooranad can therefore be appreciated as part of a continuing cultural tradition in which literature, rhythm, gesture, comedy and social commentary come together in a direct and accessible form of narrative theatre.
