DESCRIPTION:Ottanthullal is one of Kerala’s distinctive solo dance-theatr
 e traditions\, combining verse narration\, expressive movement\, music\, h
umour and satire. Introduced in the 18th century by the celebrated Malayal
am poet Kunchan Nambiar\, Thullal developed as a performance form that com
municated literary and mythological narratives in accessible Malayalam\, w
hile also allowing scope for humour\, social observation and audience inte
raction. Kerala Tourism identifies Ottan Thullal as the most popular of th
e three Thullal forms\, the others being Seethankan Thullal and Parayan Th
ullal. Each form differs in costume\, tempo\, metre and aspects of musical
presentation\, with Ottan Thullal distinguished by its comparatively fast
rhythm and energetic style. A recital in the Sooranad area offers an oppo
rtunity to encounter this living performance tradition in the cultural set
ting of southern Kerala\, where Thullal is among the traditional arts pres
ented at temple and regional festivals. The performer appears in a stylise
d costume and makeup and presents verses through codified movements\, foot
work\, gestures and facial expressions. The performance is not simply a da
nce presentation: it combines recitation\, acting and movement\, with the
performer often incorporating spontaneous dialogue and responding directly
to the audience. Thullal texts are written in Malayalam and are generally
based on episodes from Hindu epics\, while their satirical treatment can
connect traditional stories with contemporary…\n\nEvent page: https://ap
