About this event
Machattu Mamangam is the annual five-day temple festival held at the Machattu Thiruvanikavu Temple in Vadakkancherry, Thrissur district, dedicated to Goddess Bhagavathy. The festival is particularly renowned for its distinctive Kuthirakolams, large decorated horse effigies that are ceremonially brought to the temple by devotees as offerings. The principal Kuthira Vela takes place on the concluding day, when the elaborate horse figures become the centrepiece of a colourful procession accompanied by traditional percussion. The festival begins with a Parapurappadu on the first Friday of the Malayalam month of Kumbham and builds towards the main celebration on the following Tuesday. The five-day observance combines temple rituals with folk traditions, music and community participation, giving it a distinctive place among the temple festivals of the Thrissur region. Five desams—Karumathra, Viruppakka, Mangalam, Parlikadu and Manalithara—are the principal participating communities and traditionally organise the festival in a spirit of friendly competition. The festival is also associated with Thekkumkara, Punnamparambu and Panangattukara, which take the initiative in conducting the pooram on a three-year cycle. According to the traditional account recorded by Kerala Tourism, the horse effigies originated from an attempt to introduce a horse procession comparable to the elephant festivals of the region. Because suitable horses were difficult to obtain and train, artificial horses were adopted instead, eventually becoming the defining feature of Machattu Mamangam. The concluding celebrations feature the ceremonial arrival of the Kuthirakolams, while evenings during the festival include elephant pageants accompanied by Chendamelam, as well as cultural programmes. The combination of giant horse effigies, percussion, elephants, ritual observances and participation by the surrounding desams gives the festival its distinctive character. Machattu Mamangam is firmly established in Kerala’s annual festival calendar and is officially documented by Kerala Tourism as a major traditional festival of Thrissur district. Kerala Tourism’s 2026–27 Digital Event Calendar lists Machattu Mamangam for February 2027. Festival dates are calculated according to the Malayalam calendar and local temple customs and may be adjusted by the temple authorities. The celebration remains an important expression of the religious traditions and community identity of Vadakkancherry, while its Kuthirakolam procession preserves a distinctive form of Kerala’s ritual and folk heritage.
