DESCRIPTION:Machattu Mamangam is the annual five-day temple festival held a
t the Machattu Thiruvanikavu Temple in Vadakkancherry\, Thrissur district\
, dedicated to Goddess Bhagavathy. The festival is particularly renowned f
or its distinctive Kuthirakolams\, large decorated horse effigies that are
ceremonially brought to the temple by devotees as offerings. The principa
l Kuthira Vela takes place on the concluding day\, when the elaborate hors
e figures become the centrepiece of a colourful procession accompanied by
traditional percussion. The festival begins with a Parapurappadu on the fi
rst Friday of the Malayalam month of Kumbham and builds towards the main c
elebration on the following Tuesday. The five-day observance combines temp
le rituals with folk traditions\, music and community participation\, givi
ng it a distinctive place among the temple festivals of the Thrissur regio
 n. Five desams—Karumathra\, Viruppakka\, Mangalam\, Parlikadu and Manali
thara—are the principal participating communities and traditionally orga
nise the festival in a spirit of friendly competition. The festival is als
 o associated with Thekkumkara\, Punnamparambu and Panangattukara\, which t
ake the initiative in conducting the pooram on a three-year cycle. Accordi
ng to the traditional account recorded by Kerala Tourism\, the horse effig
ies originated from an attempt to introduce a horse procession comparable
to the elephant festivals of the region. Because suitable horses were diff
icult to obtain and train\, artificial horses…\n\nEvent page: https://ap
