About this event

Koodalmanikyam Utsavam is the annual festival of Sree Koodalmanikyam Temple at Irinjalakuda in Thrissur district, a historic temple renowned for its dedication to Bharata, the brother of Rama. Kerala Tourism identifies Koodalmanikyam as the only temple in Kerala dedicated to Bharata, while the temple itself is distinguished by its traditional Kerala architectural features, including a circular sanctum with a copper-plated roof, an ornate eastern gopuram, a koothambalam and intricate wood and stone craftsmanship. The annual Thiruvutsavam is one of the principal occasions in the temple calendar and is generally conducted in April or May. The 2026 festival was scheduled from April 28, when the ceremonial flag-hoisting took place, through May 8, when the arattu was held, with nine festival days in between. The celebrations centre on temple rituals and offerings and are accompanied by traditional music, percussion and cultural programmes. The festival is particularly known for its elephant pageantry, with caparisoned elephants forming an important part of the ceremonial atmosphere. The temple’s official 2026 programme also included cultural presentations and seven days of Kathakali performances, demonstrating the continuing connection between the festival and Kerala’s classical performing arts. Such programmes complement the religious observances and help make the festival an important cultural gathering as well as a pilgrimage occasion. The temple has a distinctive place in Kerala’s religious landscape because of its single principal deity, Bharata, and its long-standing traditions of worship. Its association with the Nalambala Darshanam pilgrimage, conducted during the Malayalam month of Karkidakam, further connects the shrine with the four temples dedicated to Rama and his three brothers. During the Utsavam, devotees and visitors gather at Irinjalakuda to participate in the temple celebrations, observe the processions and experience traditional performing arts in a historic temple setting. The festival is especially significant for those interested in Kerala’s temple culture, ritual traditions, percussion ensembles, elephant pageantry and classical arts. While the celebrations have a strong devotional character, visitors should remember that the temple remains an active place of worship and that access to ritual areas and specific programmes is governed by temple rules. Koodalmanikyam Utsavam therefore offers a distinctive view of Kerala’s living temple heritage, combining devotion, ritual, architecture, traditional arts and community participation at one of the state’s notable Bharata temples.
