About this event

Kerala Bee Box Training is listed as a class in building a bee box, placed at a “Punalur Apiary Centre” in Punalur, Kollam. A bee box is a wooden hive for bees that live in a cavity, not the open cliff comb of a wild rock bee. In Kerala the usual box bee is the Indian hive bee, Apis cerana. Some keepers also use the Italian honey bee, Apis mellifera, and a smaller plain box for the stingless bee, Tetragonula. The hive taught in public classes is a movable-frame box, often the ISI A or B type. It has a brood chamber, wooden frames set a bee-space apart, a honey super above, a lid, and a small entrance. Building one is carpentry: straight timber, an exact frame size, and a gap the bees will not clog with wax in the wrong place. Putting a live colony into that box is a separate skill. This listing does not say which bee, which box, or whether the day is only woodwork.

The map for “Punalur Apiary Centre” opens on the Rubber Board Regional Office in Punalur. That office deals with rubber. It is not a published apiary, and no teacher, fee, or class notice is attached to this name. “Last Saturday” is only a directory label. Punalur is a rubber town, and rubber flowers are a known nectar source for box bees after the trees flower, which is why a rubber office and a bee class are easy to mix up. That mix-up does not turn the office into a classroom.

The beekeeping centre Kerala does publish is in another district. Horticorp runs the Kallimel centre near Mavelikara, in Alappuzha, on a small campus with Indian hive bees and stingless bees. It buys honey from farmers, sells it as Amruth honey, and trains new keepers. Public accounts describe a short orientation for beginners, later batches arranged with agricultural officers, and a subsidy on hives and tools for people who finish. The phone given for that centre is 0479 2356695. Those details belong to Mavelikara. They should not be pasted onto a Punalur Saturday.

What the words “bee box construction” still explain is the difference between a hive you build and a hive you find. A wild rock-bee comb, the kind associated with the honey hills near Thenmala, hangs in the open and should be left alone. A box is a managed cavity. The keeper opens it, looks at the queen and the brood, feeds the colony when flowers are scarce, and takes honey from the super. A construction class, if one is later announced, would be benches, timber, and measurements. It would not be a honey tasting, a craft fair, or a temple rite. Gloves and a calm manner matter only after a live colony is introduced. Nothing in the Punalur listing says the office is a plastic-free zone, that parking is arranged, or that a visitor can arrive on the last Saturday and be taught.

Punalur itself is a real town on the Kallada. The suspension bridge of 1877, the railway, the paper-mill history, and the road toward the ghats are the features people come for. They are features of the town, not of a bee class. For a search such as bee box training in Kollam, a Punalur apiary, or how to build a hive in Kerala, treat this name as a label. Ask Horticorp, or the local Krishi Bhavan, whether any class is actually on the board. If nobody has posted a date, the last Saturday in a directory is not a workshop.

🚆 Railway: Punalur Railway Station — approximately 2 km from the Rubber Board Regional Office. Kollam Junction is about 45 km.

🏨 Stay: Hotel Panacea Ventures; New Kavitha Hotel; A One Hotel

✅ Notes: Kerala Bee Box Training is a directory label for a bee-box class at a “Punalur Apiary Centre.” The map opens on the Rubber Board Regional Office, which is not a published apiary. “Last Saturday” is only a month-pattern label. No teacher, fee, or class date is published. The beekeeping centre that Horticorp actually runs is at Kallimel, near Mavelikara, not in Punalur.
