About this event

Guruvayur Ekadasi is the principal Ekadasi celebration at the renowned Guruvayur Sree Krishna Temple in Thrissur district and one of the most important annual observances in the temple’s religious calendar. Dedicated to Lord Krishna, worshipped as Guruvayurappan, the temple is among Kerala’s most prominent pilgrimage centres and is celebrated for its traditional Kerala-style architecture, ancient murals and long-established worship practices. Guruvayur Ekadasi falls on the Ekadasi, or eleventh day, of the bright fortnight in the Malayalam month of Vrischikam, generally during November or December. The festival period begins well before the main Ekadasi day, with Ekadasi Vilakku observances leading up to the celebration. Kerala Tourism identifies the month-long festival as being marked by several important rituals, including Udayasthamana Pooja, the dawn-to-dusk worship conducted on Ekadasi day, and an eleven-day Carnatic music festival held in memory of the celebrated musician Chembai Vaidyanatha Bhagavatar. On the main day, devotees gather for special worship and darshan, with the temple opening early for Nirmalya Darshan. The evening celebrations culminate in Ekadasi Vilakku, accompanied by a ceremonial procession featuring caparisoned elephants and traditional music. Another important observance is the memorial ceremony for Guruvayur Kesavan, the renowned temple elephant, while the procession to the Parthasarathi Temple commemorates the traditional association of Lord Krishna with the teaching of the Bhagavad Gita to Arjuna. (keralatourism.org) The festival also provides an important setting for devotional music and traditional temple arts, with the Chembai music festival forming a significant part of the wider Ekadasi season. Many devotees observe Ekadasi through fasting, prayer, chanting and other personal devotional practices, although the specific manner of observance varies according to individual tradition. The illuminated temple surroundings, devotional gatherings, percussion music and ceremonial processions create an atmosphere characteristic of major Kerala temple festivals. Guruvayur Ekadasi is therefore both a major religious observance and an important expression of Kerala’s living temple culture. For visitors, the festival offers an opportunity to witness established rituals, traditional music and ceremonial practices at one of the state’s best-known Krishna temples. For 2026, Kerala Tourism lists Guruvayur Ekadasi on 21 November, although festival dates should be confirmed with the temple authorities because religious calendars and local observances can affect the final schedule. Entry to the temple is restricted to Hindus.
