About this event

The Maha Shivaratri celebration at Ernakulam Shiva Temple, popularly known as Ernakulathappan Temple, is an important annual religious observance dedicated to Lord Shiva in the heart of Kochi. The temple stands on Durbar Hall Road and is one of the prominent Shiva shrines associated with the city's history. According to the Ernakulam district administration, the temple was built during the period of the Maharajas of Kochi and is traditionally counted among the seven royal temples of the former Kochi kingdom. It is administered by the Cochin Devaswom Board. The deity, worshipped as Ernakulathappan, is traditionally associated with a west-facing shrine, an unusual orientation noted in the district administration's description of the temple. Maha Shivaratri is observed on the sacred night dedicated to Lord Shiva and forms an important occasion for special worship at the temple. The celebrations include abhishekam, dhara, nivedyam, poojas, deeparadhana and other ritual observances, with devotees visiting the temple for darshan and worship. The 2026 Shivaratri programme demonstrates the scale of the observance: the temple opened for darshan in the early morning, followed by Nirmalya Darshan, several abhishekams, special poojas and a Shiveeli procession accompanied by traditional percussion. The programme also included spiritual lectures, devotional music and cultural performances, while special arrangements were made for devotees observing the traditional fast. The festival reaches into the evening and night, with additional abhishekam and Rudrabhishekam forming part of the Shivaratri observances. The temple's annual religious calendar also includes an eight-day Utsavam in Makaram, distinct from the Maha Shivaratri observance. The combination of ancient temple traditions, special Shiva worship, devotional music, percussion and cultural programmes gives Shivaratri a distinctive place in the religious life of Ernakulam. The festival attracts devotees from Kochi and surrounding areas, particularly during the main day and night of worship. Maha Shivaratri itself falls according to the Hindu lunar calendar and generally occurs in February or March. In 2026, the celebration at Ernakulam Shiva Temple was held on 15 February. Maha Shivaratri in 2027 falls on 6 March, although the temple's detailed programme should be confirmed closer to the date. The celebration remains a significant annual expression of Shiva devotion at one of Kochi's historic temples.
