DESCRIPTION:The Maha Shivaratri celebration at Ernakulam Shiva Temple\, pop
 ularly known as Ernakulathappan Temple\, is an important annual religious 
 observance dedicated to Lord Shiva in the heart of Kochi. The temple stand
 s on Durbar Hall Road and is one of the prominent Shiva shrines associated
  with the city's history. According to the Ernakulam district administrati
 on\, the temple was built during the period of the Maharajas of Kochi and 
 is traditionally counted among the seven royal temples of the former Kochi
  kingdom. It is administered by the Cochin Devaswom Board. The deity\, wor
 shipped as Ernakulathappan\, is traditionally associated with a west-facin
 g shrine\, an unusual orientation noted in the district administration's d
 escription of the temple. Maha Shivaratri is observed on the sacred night 
 dedicated to Lord Shiva and forms an important occasion for special worshi
 p at the temple. The celebrations include abhishekam\, dhara\, nivedyam\, 
 poojas\, deeparadhana and other ritual observances\, with devotees visitin
 g the temple for darshan and worship. The 2026 Shivaratri programme demons
 trates the scale of the observance: the temple opened for darshan in the e
 arly morning\, followed by Nirmalya Darshan\, several abhishekams\, specia
 l poojas and a Shiveeli procession accompanied by traditional percussion. 
 The programme also included spiritual lectures\, devotional music and cult
 ural performances\, while special arrangements were made for devotees obse
