About this event

Chittur Konganpada is a distinctive annual festival held at Chitturkavu Bhagavathy Temple in Chittur, Palakkad district, combining temple worship, folklore and a traditional narrative of warfare. The festival commemorates the victory traditionally attributed to the Nairs of Chittur over the Konganadu militia in 918 CE and is described by the Palakkad district administration as a festival of historical importance. It is held in the Malayalam month of Kumbham, generally during February or March, on the first Monday after the new moon. The celebrations begin with Chilambu, a ritual associated with the legendary declaration of war, followed by a sequence of ceremonies that symbolically recreate aspects of the conflict. The festival is particularly distinctive because of its martial imagery and ritualised enactments rather than conventional temple pageantry alone. Arippathattu marks an important stage in the traditional sequence, while the procession of the temple oracle, or Velichappadu, forms another prominent part of the observances. Participants also take part in Kuttikolam, a procession in which children are dressed in symbolic costumes and carried on the shoulders of adults. The festival culminates in a dramatic series of ritual enactments associated with the traditional war narrative. Men wearing buffalo-head masks participate in mock fighting, symbolising the buffaloes said to have died in the legendary battle. The ritual sequence also includes Olavayana, the ceremonial reading of the Kongan king’s declaration of war, and the Pothottam, followed by mock combat and other traditional performances. On the third day, 101 rounds of kathinavedi, traditional iron-pipe crackers, are used in the festival’s ritual commemoration of victory. Traditional arts and community participation are integral to the celebration, with the festival providing a setting for local customs and performance traditions that have been maintained through generations. Kerala Tourism describes Konganpada as a unique festival that combines religion, mythology and history, while the Palakkad district administration identifies it as a major festival of the Chittur Bhagavathy Temple. Although the battle narrative is preserved through local tradition and ritual rather than presented as a modern historical reconstruction, it remains central to the festival’s identity. Chittur Konganpada therefore offers a distinctive example of Kerala’s living ritual heritage, where a temple festival becomes a vehicle for preserving community memory, folklore, symbolic warfare and devotional traditions. Its unusual combination of religious observance and martial ritual makes it one of Palakkad’s most distinctive traditional festivals.
