DESCRIPTION:Chittur Konganpada is a distinctive annual festival held at Chi
tturkavu Bhagavathy Temple in Chittur\, Palakkad district\, combining temp
le worship\, folklore and a traditional narrative of warfare. The festival
commemorates the victory traditionally attributed to the Nairs of Chittur
over the Konganadu militia in 918 CE and is described by the Palakkad dis
trict administration as a festival of historical importance. It is held in
the Malayalam month of Kumbham\, generally during February or March\, on
the first Monday after the new moon. The celebrations begin with Chilambu\
, a ritual associated with the legendary declaration of war\, followed by
a sequence of ceremonies that symbolically recreate aspects of the conflic
 t. The festival is particularly distinctive because of its martial imagery
and ritualised enactments rather than conventional temple pageantry alone
. Arippathattu marks an important stage in the traditional sequence\, whil
e the procession of the temple oracle\, or Velichappadu\, forms another pr
ominent part of the observances. Participants also take part in Kuttikolam
\, a procession in which children are dressed in symbolic costumes and car
ried on the shoulders of adults. The festival culminates in a dramatic ser
ies of ritual enactments associated with the traditional war narrative. Me
n wearing buffalo-head masks participate in mock fighting\, symbolising th
e buffaloes said to have died in the legendary battle. The ritual sequence
  also includes Olavayana\, the ceremonial…\n\nEvent page: https://app.ev
