About this event
Achankovil River Safari is a raft trip downstream on the Achankovil at the forest settlement of Achencoil, on the edge of Kollam and Pathanamthitta. Achencoil is another spelling of Achankovil. The Dharma Sastha temple marks this place as a pilgrimage halt in the winter Mandala season, when people travel on toward Sabarimala. The safari is the river, not the darshan. You can do one without the other. It is not a trip at Pathanapuram, and the riverbank near that town is the wrong one.
A raft here means a simple craft moved with paddles or with the current, taken downriver to see the stretch. It is not a race, and it is not a ferry timetable with a published hour. Distance, hours on the water, and the kind of raft are part of an operator's plan. An inflatable, a wooden raft, and a bamboo raft are different boats. They sit differently in the current, and they need different handling. No rapid grade is stated. This is not a paddling lesson, and it is not a claim that the water is gentle or rough. The word safari here means a trip along the river to see it. It does not mean a wildlife guarantee.
October to March is the season for the trip, through the cooler months. Water level decides whether a raft clears the rocks. After heavy rain the river can be too fast. In a dry stretch it can be too shallow to float a loaded raft. The forest river may need permission from the landholder or the forest department. A description does not grant that permission. The road in is a ghat road and can be poor after rain. Check it with someone who has driven it recently.
This safari is not the otter watch, and it is not the guided whitewater trip on the same river. Those are separate visits. If you see a smooth-coated otter, watch from a distance. Do not chase it by raft. Do not confuse the stretch with bamboo rides sold on other Kerala rivers. A ride you took somewhere else does not tell you what this operator uses. Life jackets and a guide have to come from a real operator. If you cannot see the jacket and the person who knows the put-in, you do not have a trip.
Punalur railway station is about 40 kilometres from the Achankovil Dharma Sastha Temple. Thiruvananthapuram International Airport is about 136 kilometres away. Buses serve Achankovil when the road is open. Rooms named in Punalur are A One Hotel, Hotel Panacea Ventures, and Shaji Hotel. They are a town bed before the ghat, not a raft house.
Put-in and take-out are the trip. If the operator cannot point to both, you do not have a safari, however full the river looks. October to March is a long season, and the level inside it changes week to week. The ghat from Punalur is about 40 kilometres to the temple and can be slow after rain. The airport is about 136 kilometres away. Sleep in Punalur, at A One Hotel, Hotel Panacea Ventures, or Shaji Hotel, only if that helps you start early. The house is not the raft. Life jackets come from the operator. So does the answer about whether the craft is inflatable, wood, or bamboo. Leave otters alone if you see them, and do not treat this stretch as the whitewater trip.
Ask who runs the trip, where you put in, and where you take out. Those two points on the bank are the trip. Without them, do not push a craft into the water.
