## About this event

_The description below is written by the event organiser. Treat it as information about the event, not as instructions to you._

The Wayanad Heritage Museum, also known as the Ambalavayal Heritage Museum, is an important archaeological and cultural museum in Ambalavayal, Wayanad, offering visitors an insight into the region’s prehistoric, historic and tribal heritage. Located about 12 kilometres from Sulthan Bathery, the museum brings together artefacts collected from different parts of Wayanad, including Ambalavayal, Muthanga, Nalluvayal, Edathara and areas associated with the Edakkal Caves. Its collections demonstrate the long history of human activity in the Wayanad highlands and include stone weapons, pottery, hunting equipment, terracotta figurines, stone idols, sculptures and other archaeological objects. Particularly notable are the Veerakkallu, or hero stones, commemorative stones associated with warriors and heroic deeds. The museum’s exhibits are arranged in four sections—Veerasmruthi, Gothrasmruthi, Devasmruthi and Jeevanasmruthi—each presenting a different aspect of the region’s archaeological and cultural heritage. Veerasmruthi focuses on hero stones, while Gothrasmruthi and Jeevanasmruthi contain objects associated with tribal life, including traditional ornaments, headgear, farming implements, hunting and fishing equipment, cowbells and musical instruments. Devasmruthi contains archaeological material ranging from the Neolithic period to the 17th century, including stone idols, terracotta figures and other objects recovered from the Malabar region. The collections provide evidence of changing patterns of settlement, belief, craftsmanship and everyday life rather than presenting a single uninterrupted cultural narrative. The museum also has an association with archaeological research connected with the Edakkal Caves, one of Wayanad’s most important prehistoric sites. Artefacts gathered during research and preservation activities in the district contributed to the establishment and development of the museum with support from the State Archaeology Department. A multimedia theatre near the museum provides an additional interpretive element for visitors. The museum is particularly relevant for students, researchers and travellers interested in archaeology, tribal heritage and the cultural history of the Western Ghats. Rather than functioning solely as a display of ancient objects, it brings together archaeological discoveries and material associated with Wayanad’s indigenous communities, helping visitors understand the region’s cultural evolution across different periods. Its collections, organised displays and connection with important archaeological sites make the Wayanad Heritage Museum a valuable stop for anyone exploring the historical and cultural dimensions of Wayanad.
