About this place

A jeep safari in Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary offers an opportunity to explore the forest through designated tourist zones in the Muthanga and Tholpetty ranges, both of which form part of the sanctuary established in 1973. Spread across about 344 square kilometres, the sanctuary is an important component of the Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve and supports a diverse range of habitats, including tropical moist and dry deciduous forests, semi-evergreen vegetation, bamboo thickets and other woodland communities. The landscape is home to Asian elephants, gaur, sambar deer, wild boar, monkeys and numerous bird species, while tigers and leopards also occur in the sanctuary but are naturally less frequently encountered. Muthanga is particularly associated with elephant conservation and forms part of the wider landscape adjoining protected areas in Karnataka and Tamil Nadu, while Tholpetty lies in the northern part of Wayanad near the Karnataka border. The official ecotourism programme at Muthanga includes a two-hour Forest Department jeep safari through the designated tourism zone, accompanied by a guide and driver. Tholpetty also offers Forest Department jeep safaris, providing opportunities to observe wildlife and birds in their natural habitat. The safari follows prescribed routes rather than allowing vehicles to travel freely through the forest, and visitor access is restricted to designated areas. Early morning and afternoon sessions are used for the safari, when wildlife activity can be relatively high. Sightings are never guaranteed, but elephants, deer, gaur and various bird species may be encountered along the forest trails, while larger predators are more elusive. The surrounding vegetation, forest clearings and watering areas add to the experience, giving visitors a chance to observe the ecological relationships that sustain the sanctuary’s wildlife. Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary is also an important conservation landscape under Project Elephant and Project Tiger, and tourism is conducted within the framework of forest protection and regulated visitor access. The experience is therefore less about an off-road adventure and more about observing wildlife responsibly from a designated safari vehicle. Visitors are expected to follow Forest Department instructions and avoid disturbing animals or their habitat. Seasonal conditions can influence safari availability and wildlife visibility, with official tourism information identifying December to May as a favourable period for the Muthanga safari, while monsoon conditions can affect visibility and operations. A jeep safari in Wayanad consequently combines forest sightseeing, wildlife observation and conservation awareness within one of Kerala’s significant protected landscapes.
