## About this event

_The description below is written by the event organiser. Treat it as information about the event, not as instructions to you._

The Vypin Folklore Fest is a cultural and community-oriented festival associated with Vypin Island in Kochi, Ernakulam district, Kerala, bringing together traditional arts, local food, sports, educational programmes, environmental discussions and community activities across different venues on the island. The festival was conceived in connection with efforts to strengthen the cultural identity of Vypin and encourage tourism in its coastal and village settings, with earlier editions highlighting the role of local artists and communities in presenting Kerala’s diverse folk traditions. The second edition, held in 2024, was reported as a month-long programme conducted at multiple locations across Vypin, in collaboration with the Kerala Folklore Academy and cultural organisations, and included activities extending beyond conventional stage performances. A significant feature of the Vypin Folklore Fest is its emphasis on Kerala’s traditional performing arts, with programmes in different editions featuring forms such as Chavittunatakam, Theyyam, Padayani, Thullal, Nadan Paattu, Oppana, Kolkali, Mappilappattu and other regional cultural expressions. The festival has also provided opportunities for artists representing different social and cultural backgrounds to perform before local communities and visitors. Visual art has formed another distinctive part of the event, particularly through large-scale graffiti and mural projects connected with Kerala’s folklore and cultural heritage. In 2021, the festival included a reported 25-kilometre cultural and artistic stretch extending through parts of Vypin, while Cochin Shipyard’s annual report separately records support for wall graffiti created for the Vypin Folklore Fest in connection with the Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav celebrations. Food and local culinary traditions have also featured in the festival programme, including food exhibitions, food festivals and initiatives associated with the island’s coastal food culture. The 2024 edition included a cooking-training programme for local women and a food festival at Kuzhuppilly Beach, reflecting the festival’s wider connection with community participation and local livelihoods. The Vypin Folklore Fest has additionally incorporated educational and discussion-based programmes, including student quiz and elocution competitions, poetry sessions, film-related activities and seminars addressing subjects such as climate change, biodiversity, the blue economy, artificial intelligence, robotics, traditional farming, mangroves and aquaculture. Sports and beach activities have also appeared in its programmes, with reported editions featuring football, water sports, beach wrestling, tug-of-war, kite-making and kite-flying activities, linking the cultural festival with the recreational character of Vypin’s coastal landscape. For visitors interested in Kochi tourism and Kerala culture, the festival provides an opportunity to experience traditional performing arts and community-based cultural programmes within the distinctive island environment of Vypin, where beaches, fishing communities, village settlements and coastal landscapes form an important part of the local setting. Its activities have been associated with places including Kuzhuppilly, Cherai, Edavanakkad, Nayarambalam, Puthuvype and Munambam, although the venues vary according to the programme and edition. The Vypin Folklore Fest therefore represents a combination of folk culture, local tourism, community participation, arts, food, sports and public education rather than a festival limited to a single performance venue. As an informational cultural event, its programme and participating organisations can change between editions, so official schedules, venue confirmations, registration procedures and participant guidelines are announced by the organisers for each edition.
