About this place
Vellarimala Trek is an adventurous Western Ghats trekking experience in the Kozhikode–Wayanad mountain region, known for dense forests, rugged terrain, cascading waterfalls, streams and spectacular high-altitude views. Vellarimala forms part of the Camp’s Hump mountain system, which extends across the Kozhikode and Wayanad ranges, and its highest summit, Vavul Mala, rises to about 2,339 metres above sea level. The landscape changes dramatically along the trekking route, with forested sections, rocky stretches, open mountain terrain and scenic viewpoints creating a rewarding experience for experienced nature and adventure travellers. The surrounding region is particularly rich in natural beauty, with the Kanjirapuzha River flowing through rocky terrain and producing numerous cascades and waterfalls. The Vellari Mala landscape near Thusharagiri is regarded as a trekker’s paradise, offering lush greenery, streams, rocky formations and peaceful natural surroundings. Trekkers can expect a physically demanding journey through uneven forest paths and steep mountain sections, with the terrain becoming more challenging as the route gains elevation. The changing scenery is one of the major attractions, as shaded forest trails gradually reveal expansive views of valleys, ridges and the surrounding Western Ghats. The area’s biodiversity further enhances the experience, with opportunities to observe native vegetation, birds, butterflies and other wildlife associated with the forest ecosystem. Vellarimala is particularly appealing to travellers who prefer immersive wilderness experiences over heavily developed tourist attractions. The trek is best undertaken with appropriate preparation and local guidance, particularly because the terrain is rugged and weather conditions can change quickly in the mountains. Monsoon and post-monsoon periods bring abundant greenery and flowing streams, although heavy rainfall can make trails slippery and affect trekking conditions. Photography enthusiasts will find excellent opportunities to capture forest landscapes, waterfalls, misty mountain ridges and dramatic valleys. The wider Vellarimala–Thusharagiri region also offers opportunities to combine trekking with waterfall exploration and nature-based activities. Travellers approaching from the Kozhikode side can use Adivaram as an important access point, while the Wayanad side is connected through the Meppadi–Chooralmala region. Accommodation is available in nearby towns and villages, particularly through homestays, lodges and nature-oriented stays. For adventure travellers seeking a challenging mountain experience in northern Kerala, Vellarimala Trek offers an impressive combination of forest wilderness, waterfalls, rocky terrain and panoramic Western Ghats scenery, making it one of the region’s memorable trekking destinations.
