About this place
Vazhvanthol Waterfalls is a scenic forest waterfall destination located inside the Peppara Wildlife Sanctuary near Vithura in Thiruvananthapuram district, Kerala, offering visitors a memorable combination of jungle trekking, freshwater streams, and the untouched beauty of the southern Western Ghats. Situated approximately 50 kilometres from Thiruvananthapuram city, Vazhvanthol Waterfalls is one of the lesser-known nature attractions in the district, attracting trekking enthusiasts, photographers, nature lovers, and adventure seekers who wish to experience Kerala’s forest landscapes away from crowded tourist locations. The journey to the waterfall is not a simple sightseeing visit, as reaching the falls requires a moderate trekking route through the protected forest ecosystem of Peppara Wildlife Sanctuary, making the trail itself a major part of the overall experience. Since the waterfall is located within a wildlife sanctuary area, entry is regulated by the Kerala Forest Department, and visitors are required to obtain permission and be accompanied by an authorized forest guide for safety and conservation purposes. The trek generally begins from the forest check post area near Chathancode along the Bonacaud route and covers approximately 5 kilometres as a round trip, with around 2.5 kilometres of trekking each way. The initial section of the trail is relatively easy and passes through eucalyptus plantations, providing a comfortable introduction to the forest environment. As the route progresses deeper into the sanctuary, the landscape gradually changes into dense tropical forest with rocky pathways, natural streams, uneven terrain, and steeper inclines, making the latter sections more challenging. The trek usually takes around one and a half to two hours one way depending on the walking pace, weather conditions, and time spent exploring the surroundings. One of the highlights of the Vazhvanthol Waterfalls Trek is the changing scenery along the route, where visitors move from plantation landscapes into rich forest habitats filled with native vegetation, flowing streams, and the sounds of birds and wildlife. The trail leads first to smaller cascades and water streams before reaching the main multi-tiered Vazhvanthol waterfall, where water flows through rocky formations surrounded by thick greenery. The cool atmosphere, mist from the falls, and peaceful forest surroundings make the destination especially appealing for nature photography, relaxation, and outdoor exploration. The waterfall is particularly impressive during and after the monsoon season when the streams receive increased water flow, creating a more dramatic natural setting. The months following the southwest monsoon, especially from August to November, are generally considered favourable for experiencing the waterfall at its fullest, although trail conditions can be more challenging due to wet rocks and increased humidity. The Peppara Wildlife Sanctuary surrounding Vazhvanthol is part of the ecologically important Western Ghats and supports a rich variety of flora and fauna. The forest habitat is home to several species of birds, butterflies, reptiles, and mammals, including larger animals such as elephants that inhabit the sanctuary. While wildlife sightings are not guaranteed during the trek, visitors may encounter signs of forest animals or observe the diverse ecosystem under the guidance of trained forest personnel. Due to the protected nature of the area, trekkers must follow safety instructions, avoid disturbing wildlife, and remain within permitted trekking routes. Visitors are advised to wear sturdy trekking shoes with good grip, carry sufficient drinking water and food, and prepare for limited facilities, as there are no regular shops or restaurants available along the forest trail. During rainy periods, leeches may be present, and the rocks near the waterfall can become slippery, requiring additional caution. The Vazhvanthol Waterfalls Trek is often combined with visits to nearby attractions such as Peppara Dam, Bonacaud, Ponmudi hills, and other nature destinations in the eastern part of Thiruvananthapuram district. With its combination of moderate adventure, forest biodiversity, freshwater landscapes, and peaceful surroundings, Vazhvanthol Waterfalls remains one of the most rewarding trekking destinations near Thiruvananthapuram, offering visitors an authentic experience of Kerala’s wilderness while promoting responsible ecotourism and conservation of the fragile forest ecosystem.
