About this place

Varkala’s coastal waters offer opportunities for scuba diving and other water-based activities against the distinctive backdrop of its red laterite cliffs and Arabian Sea shoreline. The Varkala–Edava coast is recognised by Kerala Tourism as a scuba-diving area, with diving activities conducted off Edava Beach, close to Varkala. Depending on sea and weather conditions, the experience provides an opportunity to explore natural underwater formations and marine life while accompanied by trained personnel. Introductory “try dives” are available in Kerala for people who have not previously dived, making the activity accessible to beginners when conditions are suitable. Diving involves a briefing and preparation before entering the water, and equipment such as a mask, fins, buoyancy-control device, regulator and tank is provided as part of listed introductory experiences. The underwater environment around Varkala is shaped by coastal geology and tidal processes, with natural sea formations forming part of the character of the dive sites. Varkala’s appeal above the water is equally distinctive. Papanasam Beach, also known as Varkala Beach, lies below a striking stretch of laterite cliffs that forms the Varkala Formation, a geological feature recognised as a national geological monument by the Geological Survey of India. The cliffs are also included on UNESCO’s Tentative World Heritage List, reflecting their geological significance. The beach has long-standing religious importance as Papanasam, associated with the nearby Janardhana Swamy Temple and traditional ritual practices. The wider Varkala coastline combines this geological and cultural character with opportunities for surfing, parasailing, paragliding, stand-up paddle-boarding and other recognised water and adventure activities. Scuba diving is seasonal, with Kerala Tourism identifying October to April as the usual diving season, when sea conditions are generally calmer and visibility is more favourable; diving is suspended during the monsoon because of rough seas and strong currents. Actual activity availability remains dependent on sea conditions and the operating arrangements of recognised providers. Visitors should therefore treat diving as a guided, condition-dependent marine activity rather than an activity available throughout the year. The combination of Varkala’s distinctive geological landscape, cultural heritage and seasonal marine activities provides a varied way to experience this prominent coastal destination.
