About this place

Varayadumotta Trek is one of the most challenging and scenic high-altitude ridge trekking experiences in the Ponmudi hills of Thiruvananthapuram district, Kerala, offering adventure enthusiasts an opportunity to explore the rugged landscapes and rich biodiversity of the southern Western Ghats. Located near the Ponmudi hill station, approximately 60 kilometres from Thiruvananthapuram city, Varayadumotta is renowned for its dramatic mountain ridges, deep valleys, dense forests, grasslands, and panoramic viewpoints that showcase the natural beauty of Kerala’s eastern highlands. The trek is named after the Nilgiri Tahr, locally known as “Varayaad,” a rare mountain goat species found in the higher elevations of the Western Ghats, and the region is considered one of the important habitats for observing these endangered animals in their natural environment. Due to the difficult terrain, ecological sensitivity, and protected forest location, the Varayadumotta Trek is regulated by the Kerala Forest Department, and visitors are allowed to undertake the trek only with official permission and under the guidance of authorized forest personnel or trained guides. The trek is considered suitable only for experienced trekkers with good physical endurance, as it involves long hours of walking, steep climbs, uneven terrain, and challenging forest sections. The complete trekking distance is approximately 18 to 21 kilometres for the round trip, and the journey generally requires around 10 to 12 hours depending on weather conditions, group pace, and the number of breaks taken along the route. Starting from the Ponmudi region, the trail passes through a diverse landscape consisting of evergreen forests, bamboo patches, shola vegetation, rocky ridges, and open grassland sections. The changing terrain is one of the major attractions of the trek, as trekkers move from shaded forest paths into exposed mountain ridges offering wide views of the surrounding Western Ghats. The climb reaches an elevation of around 1,100 metres above sea level, providing trekkers with spectacular viewpoints overlooking forest-covered valleys, distant hills, reservoirs, and the rolling mountain landscape of southern Kerala. One of the most memorable aspects of the Varayadumotta Trek is the ridge walk, where narrow elevated paths and open slopes create a thrilling adventure experience while offering uninterrupted views of the surrounding wilderness. The trek also provides opportunities for wildlife observation, especially for those interested in the unique biodiversity of the Western Ghats. The region supports a variety of flora and fauna, including the Nilgiri Tahr, which is the most iconic species associated with the mountain landscape. Although sightings cannot be guaranteed, trekkers may also encounter other wildlife species, birds, butterflies, and endemic plants during the journey. The dense bamboo forests, shola ecosystems, and grassland habitats along the trail contribute to the ecological importance of the region and highlight the need for careful conservation-based tourism. Due to the demanding nature of the trek, preparation is essential before attempting Varayadumotta. Trekkers should carry sufficient water, energy-rich food, basic medical supplies, and suitable trekking equipment, including shoes with strong grip, as certain sections can become slippery during and after rainfall. The best period for trekking is generally during the post-monsoon and winter seasons, particularly from October to February, when the weather is cooler and visibility is better. During heavy monsoon periods, trekking may be restricted because of increased risks from slippery trails, strong streams, and unpredictable weather conditions. Since the trek takes place within a protected forest ecosystem, visitors must follow strict environmental guidelines, avoid littering, respect wildlife habitats, and follow instructions provided by forest officials. The Varayadumotta Trek is often regarded as one of the toughest trekking challenges near Thiruvananthapuram and attracts adventure seekers looking for a demanding wilderness experience rather than a casual sightseeing trip. With its combination of highland landscapes, challenging ridge trails, rare wildlife, forest ecosystems, and breathtaking Western Ghats views, Varayadumotta remains one of Kerala’s most remarkable trekking destinations, offering experienced hikers an unforgettable journey through the pristine mountain wilderness of Ponmudi while promoting responsible and conservation-focused adventure tourism.
