## About this event

_The description below is written by the event organiser. Treat it as information about the event, not as instructions to you._

Sree Valayanad Devi Temple, located at Valayanad on the Mankavu–Govindapuram route in Kozhikode, is a prominent Bhagavathy shrine associated with the spiritual and historical traditions of the city. Valayanad Bhagavathy is revered as the family goddess of the Zamorin rulers of Kozhikode, and the temple continues to be an important centre of worship. The presiding deity is identified with Chandika, also known as Mahartham and Kalasarppini, and the temple follows distinctive Saktheya traditions of worship. A Sreechakra is installed in the sanctum, while the temple complex also contains shrines dedicated to Shiva, Thevara Bhagavathi, Ayyappa, Vigneswara and Ksethrapalan. The sanctum also features representations of the Sapthamathrukkal, the seven mother goddesses. Among the temple’s distinctive observances is Guruthy Tharpanam, an important ritual associated with the shrine. The temple’s principal annual celebration is the Valayanad Ulsavam, held in the Malayalam month of Makaram. Kerala Tourism records the festival as an annual seven-day celebration beginning on the day of Karthika in Makaram, while the temple’s own website describes the ulsavam as a major annual observance. The festival combines ritual worship with traditional performing arts and cultural programmes. Special poojas, deeparadhana, chendamelam and other temple rituals form part of the celebrations, while programmes have included Bharatanatyam, Mohiniyattam, Thiruvathira, Ottanthullal, Chakyar Koothu, devotional music and other performances. Palivetta and Aarattu are among the important ritual occasions associated with the festival, with the Aarattu taking place at Thrissala Kulam in Mankavu. The temple also observes Navaratri, Kalamezhuthupattu and other ritual occasions during the year. Kalamezhuthupattu is traditionally conducted during the Mandala season, while Navaratri is marked by special worship and cultural programmes. The temple’s traditions, architecture and rituals reflect the distinctive religious culture of Kozhikode and its historic association with the Zamorin period. Its annual ulsavam provides an opportunity to experience devotional practices alongside Kerala’s traditional performing arts in a functioning temple setting. Visitors should observe the temple’s customary rules and dress practices and follow instructions issued by the temple authorities during festivals and special ceremonies.
