About this event
Achankovil Sree Dharmasastha Temple is a major Sastha shrine in the forested eastern part of Kollam district and one of Kerala’s five important temples associated with Lord Ayyappa. The deity is worshipped here in a distinctive household form, accompanied by his consorts Poorna and Pushkala, and the temple is traditionally regarded as one of the sacred shrines established by Parasurama. Located beside the Achankovil River and surrounded by the forests of the Western Ghats, the temple has long been associated with pilgrimage and distinctive ritual traditions influenced by the cultural links between Kerala and neighbouring Tamil Nadu. The principal annual festival of Achankovil is not a Vaishakha-month celebration but the ten-day Thiruvutsavam held during Dhanu, generally in December–January. The festival includes important ceremonies such as the Therottam, in which the temple chariot is drawn as part of the celebrations, along with processions and traditional rituals. Revathi Puja in the Malayalam month of Makaram, generally falling in January or February, is another important observance, while Pushpabhishekam is also associated with the temple’s annual ritual calendar. The shrine is particularly noted for the sandalwood paste and holy water traditionally associated with the deity and believed by devotees to have protective and healing significance. This tradition has contributed to Achankovil’s reputation as a centre of worship for those seeking relief from the effects of snakebite, although such religious beliefs should not be regarded as a substitute for emergency medical treatment. The temple’s rituals also retain distinctive Tamil influences, reflecting Achankovil’s location near the Kerala–Tamil Nadu border and its long-standing links with devotees from both states. The surrounding forest landscape contributes to the shrine’s character, with the Achankovil River and nearby natural attractions forming part of the wider pilgrimage setting. Kerala Tourism describes Achankovil as one of the important Dharmasastha temples in the state and notes its location within a forested landscape. The temple is administered by the Travancore Devaswom Board and remains an active place of worship, with regular daily rituals as well as major annual festivals. For pilgrims and visitors interested in Kerala’s Sastha traditions, Achankovil offers a distinctive combination of devotional practice, temple heritage, forest surroundings and cultural traditions shared across the Kerala–Tamil Nadu border. Visitors should follow temple customs and confirm current opening hours and festival schedules before travelling, particularly during major observances when access and crowd arrangements may change.
