About this place
Top Station, located in the eastern highlands of Munnar near the Kerala–Tamil Nadu border, is a prominent scenic viewpoint known for its elevated landscape and sweeping views of the Western Ghats. Situated at about 1,700 metres above sea level, it is the highest point on the Munnar–Kodaikanal road and offers views towards the neighbouring state of Tamil Nadu. The viewpoint overlooks deep valleys, rugged mountain slopes and the extensive highland landscapes surrounding Munnar, with mist and cloud often adding a changing character to the scenery. Top Station also has an important place in Munnar’s plantation history. It was the terminal point of the former Kundala Valley Railway, established to transport tea from the Munnar hills towards the plains. The railway evolved from an earlier monorail system, with a light railway operating from Munnar through Mattupetty and Palaar to Top Station from 1908. The devastating floods of 1924 destroyed much of the railway infrastructure, and the line was never rebuilt. Tea was subsequently transported by ropeway from Top Station towards the plains of Tamil Nadu. Remnants associated with the former railway and ropeway can still be found in the area, adding a historical dimension to the landscape. The surrounding hills form part of the biodiversity-rich Western Ghats, with grasslands, shola vegetation and plantation landscapes occurring across the wider Munnar region. Top Station is also associated with Neelakurinji, the flowering plant for which Munnar is renowned; the flowers bloom periodically and can transform sections of the highland landscape when conditions are favourable. The viewpoint is especially attractive when the weather is clear enough to reveal the valleys and mountains of Tamil Nadu, while misty conditions create a more subdued mountain setting. Its elevated location and changing weather make visibility variable, so the character of the view can differ considerably from one visit to another. Top Station is primarily a sightseeing and viewpoint destination, although trekking routes in the surrounding highlands are also associated with the area. Visitors should remain on permitted paths and respect local environmental regulations. With its combination of panoramic mountain scenery, plantation history, Western Ghats landscapes and remnants of the old Kundala railway system, Top Station represents both the natural and historical character of the Munnar highlands.
