## About this event

_The description below is written by the event organiser. Treat it as information about the event, not as instructions to you._

Tirur’s Thunchan Festival is an established annual literary and cultural celebration held at Thunchan Parambu, the birthplace of Thunchath Ramanujan Ezhuthachan, widely regarded as the father of the Malayalam language. Organised around the Thunchan Memorial and its continuing programme of literary and cultural activities, the festival brings together writers, poets, scholars, artists, students and readers to celebrate Malayalam literature and Kerala’s wider intellectual heritage. Thunchath Ezhuthachan, a major figure of Malayalam literature associated with the 16th century, is remembered particularly for his influential renderings of the Ramayana and Mahabharata and for his contribution to the development and popularisation of Malayalam literary language and script. Thunchan Parambu preserves this legacy through a literary museum, research library, manuscript collection and cultural spaces, including the Saraswathi Mandapam. The annual Thunchan Festival is traditionally held around January or February, with Kerala Tourism describing it as a multi-day cultural event featuring literary seminars, poetry readings, cultural discussions, music, dance and other artistic programmes. A distinctive feature of the celebration is the ceremonial procession of Ezhuthachan’s iron stylus, preserved at the memorial and carried through Tirur as a tribute to the poet and his contribution to Malayalam literature. The festival also provides a forum for discussions on literature, language, translation, culture and contemporary social themes, bringing together participants from Kerala and other parts of India. Its programme extends beyond formal literary sessions, incorporating performances and public cultural activities that connect scholarship with the wider community. The 2026 festival at Thunchan Parambu again featured literary seminars, cultural discussions, poetry and artistic programmes, demonstrating the continuing role of the celebration in Tirur’s cultural life. The memorial itself is recognised as a centre for literary research and manuscript preservation, while the annual festival transforms the heritage site into a gathering place for readers, writers, scholars and cultural enthusiasts. Alongside the Thunchan Festival, Thunchan Parambu is particularly known for its annual Vidyarambham ceremony on Vijayadashami, when children are traditionally introduced to learning. Together, these activities have established Thunchan Parambu as an important centre for Malayalam literary heritage and cultural exchange.
