About this place
Thusharagiri Waterfalls, in Kozhikode district at the foothills of the Western Ghats, is a popular trekking and nature destination known for its cascading waterfalls, forested slopes, streams and scenic mountain landscape. The name Thusharagiri refers to the mist-like appearance created by the waterfalls as they descend through the rocky terrain. The principal trekking route begins near the hanging bridge and follows forest trails towards a series of cascades, including Erattumukku, Mazhavil Chattom and Thumbithullum Para. Along the route, trekkers encounter streams, rocky sections, narrow paths and bridges, with the surrounding vegetation creating a distinctly forested setting. Erattumukku is among the first major waterfalls encountered on the trail, while Mazhavil Chattom lies farther uphill and Thumbithullum Para is reached beyond it. The landscape combines evergreen forest, streams and plantations, with the changing character of the waterfalls adding to the appeal of the route. One of the notable natural features along the trail is Thanni Muthassi, an old Thanni or Bedda Nut tree traditionally believed to be around 400 years old. Thusharagiri also forms part of a longer trekking route towards Vythiri in Wayanad, making the area significant for trekkers exploring the Western Ghats across the Kozhikode–Wayanad landscape. The Kerala Forest Department lists Thusharagiri as an ecotourism centre offering trekking, nature education and guide services. The experience is best suited to visitors prepared for uneven and sometimes steep terrain, and appropriate footwear is important, particularly where trails and rocks become wet. Water levels and trail conditions change considerably with rainfall. Kerala Tourism notes that the waterfalls take on a different character during the monsoon and advises against visiting at the peak of the monsoon, when heavy rain can make the terrain and watercourses hazardous. The Forest Department’s ecotourism guidance also advises trekkers to use guides when entering forest areas, remain within designated areas, avoid littering and respect wildlife. Rather than being simply a viewpoint visit, Thusharagiri offers an opportunity to experience a succession of waterfalls and forest landscapes on foot, making it a distinctive nature and trekking destination in northern Kerala.
