## About this event

_The description below is written by the event organiser. Treat it as information about the event, not as instructions to you._

Thusharagiri Forest Area is a prominent eco-tourism and nature destination in the Western Ghats of Kozhikode district, Kerala, known for its cascading waterfalls, evergreen forests, streams and trekking routes. Located in the Kodenchery region, around 50 kilometres from Kozhikode, Thusharagiri offers a combination of forest scenery and outdoor adventure within the eastern highlands of the district. Kerala Tourism identifies Thusharagiri as one of Kozhikode's important waterfall destinations, with the name referring to the mist-covered appearance created by the falling water and surrounding mountain landscape. The area is particularly attractive to travellers interested in trekking, waterfalls, nature photography and exploring the Western Ghats. The main attraction is the series of waterfalls formed along the Chalippuzha River, including Erattumukku, Mazhavil Chattom and Thumbithullum Para. Kerala Tourism identifies Erattumukku as the tallest of the three, with a drop of about 75 metres, while the other cascades occur farther along the trekking route through the forest. The waterfalls are surrounded by dense greenery, rocky terrain and flowing streams, creating changing scenery as visitors move deeper into the forest. During the monsoon, the volume of water increases considerably, although Kerala Tourism advises against visiting the area during peak monsoon conditions because of the associated safety risks. Trekking is one of the defining activities at Thusharagiri. The official Kerala Tourism trekking route begins near the hanging bridge and continues through forest terrain towards the successive waterfalls. The trail passes through streams and wooded areas before reaching Erattumukku, Mazhavil Chattom and Thumbithullum Para. Kerala Tourism also records the presence of Thanni Muthassi, an old Thanni or Bedda Nut tree along the trail, traditionally believed to be around 400 years old. For visitors seeking a more immersive Western Ghats experience, the longer trekking route can extend towards Vythiri in Wayanad, although access to particular forest routes depends on the authorised trekking programme and prevailing conditions. The surrounding forest ecosystem adds considerable ecological value to the destination. Thusharagiri lies within the Western Ghats landscape, with evergreen vegetation, streams and plantations contributing to the area's biodiversity. Kerala Tourism notes the presence of rubber, arecanut and spice plantations around the destination, while the forest environment provides opportunities for observing birds, plants and other wildlife. The area is therefore suitable not only for adventure tourism but also for nature walks, birdwatching and photography. Visitors should remember that the surrounding forest is a natural habitat and follow the instructions of forest authorities when using trails or participating in eco-tourism programmes. Thusharagiri is officially recognised within Kerala's forest eco-tourism network. The Kerala Forest Department currently lists Thusharagiri among the Kozhikode district's eco-tourism centres, alongside destinations such as Kakkayam, Peruvannamoozhi and Janakikadu. Department information identifies waterfalls as the principal attraction and lists trekking, nature education and guides among the facilities or activities associated with the destination. A Forest Department publication currently records an entrance charge of ₹30 for adults and ₹15 for students, although individual programmes, access conditions and charges can change and should be verified before travelling. The destination's accessibility makes it an important part of Kozhikode tourism. Kerala Tourism places Kozhikode railway station about 50 kilometres from Thusharagiri and Calicut International Airport about 23 kilometres from Kozhikode town. The route takes visitors from the coastal and urban environment of Kozhikode towards the greener foothills of the Western Ghats, passing through rural landscapes and plantation areas before reaching the waterfall region. Thusharagiri can also be included in a broader nature-tourism itinerary covering the eastern highlands of Kozhikode and nearby Wayanad. Visitor conditions at Thusharagiri can vary with rainfall and forest-management decisions. The official Kerala Tourism trekking page currently lists the trekking programme's visiting time as 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM and specifically warns that eco-tourism packages can become unavailable because of climate and other conditions. The Forest Department also manages its eco-tourism centres through regulated programmes designed around conservation and community participation. Visitors should therefore confirm current access, trekking availability and safety instructions before setting out, particularly during periods of heavy rain. Overall, Thusharagiri Forest Area is an important nature and adventure destination in Kozhikode, combining three major waterfalls, forest trekking, streams, biodiversity and Western Ghats…
