About this event
Thrissur Pooram is the annual temple festival centred on Thekkinkadu Maidanam and the Vadakkunnathan Temple in the heart of Thrissur, and is one of Kerala’s best-known celebrations of temple ritual, traditional music, elephant pageantry and visual arts. Held in the Malayalam month of Medam, usually during April or May, the Pooram was conceived by Sakthan Thampuran, the Maharaja of Kochi, and traditionally brings together ten participating temples in two principal groups led by Thiruvambady and Paramekkavu. The participating deities arrive in ceremonial processions to pay homage to Lord Shiva, the presiding deity of Vadakkunnathan Temple, creating a festival that combines religious observance with a remarkable display of Kerala’s performing and ceremonial traditions. Decorated elephants are among the most recognisable features, carrying the sacred images and accompanied by traditional ensembles including chenda melam and Panchavadyam. The Ilanjithara Melam, presented in the Vadakkunnathan Temple precinct, is another major musical highlight, bringing together a large ensemble of traditional percussion and wind instruments in a sustained performance that builds in rhythmic intensity. The festival’s best-known visual ceremony is Kudamattom, when the Thiruvambady and Paramekkavu groups face one another with decorated elephants and exchange colourful ceremonial parasols in a highly coordinated presentation. The festival programme extends beyond the principal Pooram day, with preparatory rituals, processions and exhibitions forming part of the wider celebrations. Fireworks traditionally mark the concluding phase of the Pooram and are conducted under official arrangements and applicable safety regulations. The festival has deep connections with Thrissur’s cultural identity and draws large crowds to Thekkinkadu Maidanam, making crowd management and public access important considerations during the main programmes. The Vadakkunnathan Temple provides the religious and historical focus of the celebrations, while the open grounds around it serve as the principal public setting for the major processions and performances. Thrissur Pooram is therefore best understood not simply as a spectacle but as a living festival tradition in which temple worship, ritual processions, percussion music, elephant decoration, craftsmanship and community participation come together. The 2026 Thrissur Pooram was held on April 26, with the principal fireworks scheduled for the early hours of April 27.
