About this event

The Onam festival at Thrikkakara Vamanamoorthy Temple in Ernakulam is one of Kerala’s most significant traditional celebrations associated with the state’s most important festival. Dedicated to Lord Vamana, the fifth incarnation of Lord Vishnu, the temple occupies a special place in the cultural and religious traditions surrounding Onam and the legend of King Mahabali. According to the traditional legend, Mahabali was a prosperous and popular ruler whose reign came to an end when Vishnu appeared in the form of Vamana and requested three paces of land. After Vamana covered the worlds with two steps, Mahabali offered his head for the third, after which he was sent to the netherworld and granted permission to return to his people annually. This annual return is traditionally associated with the celebration of Onam. Thrikkakara is particularly important to this tradition because local belief identifies the site with the legendary encounter between Vamana and Mahabali. The temple is also notable as Kerala’s principal shrine dedicated to Vamana and is counted among the 108 Divya Desams associated with the Vaishnava tradition. The annual Thiruvonamahotsavam is traditionally observed over ten days, beginning with the flag-hoisting ceremony on Atham and concluding on Thiruvonam with the concluding rituals and procession. The festival features a series of temple rituals and cultural observances, including Dashavatarachaarthu, in which the deity is adorned in forms associated with the ten avatars of Vishnu, and the special Vamanachaarthu. Pookkalams are created during the festival, while processions such as Seeveli and Pakalpooram form part of the celebrations. One of the best-known traditions is the Onasadya served at the temple during the concluding days, reflecting the importance of hospitality and communal dining during Onam. The temple complex also contains a shrine dedicated to Lord Shiva and a shrine associated with Mahabali. Beyond its religious significance, Thrikkakara has an important place in Kerala’s cultural memory as a focal point for traditions concerning the origins and spread of Onam celebrations. The festival brings together devotees and visitors in an atmosphere shaped by ritual, music, floral decoration, processions and communal participation. For those interested in Kerala’s religious heritage and festival traditions, the Onam celebrations at Thrikkakara offer an opportunity to experience a living tradition in which mythology, worship and the cultural customs of Onam remain closely intertwined.
