About this event
Thiruvonam Sadhya is the traditional grand vegetarian feast associated with Thiruvonam, the principal day of Kerala’s Onam celebrations. A community sadhya programme at Thenmala’s Culture Zone can bring this important culinary tradition into the setting of Kerala’s first planned ecotourism destination, where the Culture Zone includes an amphitheatre, sculpture garden, children’s facilities, food outlets and spaces intended to showcase local culture. The central attraction of a Thiruvonam sadhya is the traditional vegetarian meal served on a plantain leaf, reflecting Kerala’s distinctive culinary customs and the communal character of Onam. A customary sadhya includes rice along with a variety of vegetable preparations, savouries, pickles and desserts, with dishes such as avial, thoran, olan, kalan, pachadi, kichadi, sambar, rasam, buttermilk and payasam commonly associated with the feast. The exact menu varies according to household, community and organiser. Thiruvonam itself is the tenth and most significant day of the traditional Onam sequence and is associated in Kerala’s cultural tradition with the annual return of the legendary King Mahabali. The feast therefore carries meanings of abundance, hospitality, sharing and community participation. At an organised programme in Thenmala, the meal may be accompanied by cultural activities such as traditional music, dance, pookkalam displays or other Onam programmes, but the specific activities depend on the annual arrangements and should not be assumed to form a fixed part of every edition. The Culture Zone provides an appropriate cultural setting for such activities, with its amphitheatre and facilities designed to present aspects of Kerala’s art and heritage. Thenmala’s wider landscape adds a distinct environmental context to the celebration, as the destination is surrounded by forests and hill ranges and incorporates separate Culture, Leisure and Adventure zones. The combination of a traditional feast and a nature-oriented destination can introduce visitors to two complementary aspects of Kerala’s heritage: its food traditions and its distinctive landscape. A community sadhya also highlights the social dimension of Onam, when families and communities gather around a shared meal rather than treating the feast simply as a culinary attraction. The exact date of Thiruvonam changes according to the Malayalam calendar; in 2026, Kerala Tourism lists Thiruvonam on August 26. Any specific sadhya programme at Thenmala Culture Zone, including its date, menu, ticketing arrangements, cultural performances and seating arrangements, depends on the organiser and should be confirmed before publication or attendance
