About this event

Thiruvathirakali is a traditional Kerala women’s dance associated with Thiruvathira celebrations, in which groups of women perform graceful, synchronised movements in a circular formation while singing traditional Thiruvathira songs. The dance is closely connected with the cultural traditions of Kerala women and is commonly presented during the Malayalam month of Dhanu, when the Thiruvathira asterism is observed. Performers traditionally move around a nilavilakku, clapping rhythmically and following carefully coordinated steps and formations. The songs and movements give the performance a distinctive combination of music, rhythm and graceful group choreography, while the traditional attire of the participants adds to its visual character. Thiruvathirakali is associated with devotion to Shiva and with the wider customs and rituals of Thiruvathira, although the form is also widely performed today at cultural programmes, festivals and community gatherings. When presented in a temple environment, the performance takes on an additional devotional dimension and becomes part of the broader cultural atmosphere surrounding religious observances. Kulathupuzha provides a particularly distinctive setting for experiencing Kerala’s traditional arts, with the Kulathupuzha Sastha Temple situated beside the Kulathupuzha River within the eastern forest region of Kollam district. The temple is dedicated to Bala Sastha, the child form of Lord Ayyappa, and is recognised as one of Kerala’s 108 Sastha shrines. Its principal annual celebration is Vishu Mahotsavam, held during April or May, while the temple also observes its annual Tiruvutsavam during the Malayalam month of Medam. Thiruvathirakali, where included in a local cultural or festive programme, should therefore be understood as a traditional performance associated with Kerala’s wider Thiruvathira culture rather than as the principal festival of Kulathupuzha Sastha Temple. The art form remains significant as a means of transmitting songs, movements and communal traditions from one generation to another. For visitors interested in Kerala folk arts, women’s traditional dances, Thiruvathira celebrations and temple-based cultural programmes, a Thiruvathirakali presentation in the Kulathupuzha area offers an opportunity to experience an important element of Kerala’s intangible cultural heritage within a distinctive forested temple setting
