## About this event

_The description below is written by the event organiser. Treat it as information about the event, not as instructions to you._

The annual Utsavam at Thirunayathode Siva Narayana Temple in Nayathode, Ernakulam district, is a traditional temple festival centred on the worship of Lord Shiva and Lord Vishnu, whose combined presence gives the shrine its distinctive Siva-Narayana identity. The temple is a protected monument under the Kerala Department of Archaeology and is associated with the historic religious heritage of the region. Kerala Heritage places the temple in the 11th–12th century CE period and records its traditional Kerala architectural features, including the Sreekovil, Namaskara Mandapam, Valiyambalam, Nalambalam, eastern and western gopurams, an old well and a laterite compound wall. The sanctum houses a Shiva linga, while the temple’s distinctive tradition is associated with the presence of Shiva and Vishnu on the same sacred platform. The annual festival, known as Thiru Ulsavam, is traditionally conducted for ten days, beginning with Kodiyettam on Makara Sankrama day. The festival brings together daily temple rituals and devotional observances with traditional cultural performances, creating a lively setting around the historic shrine. Thayambaka and other Kerala percussion traditions form part of the festival atmosphere, while the programme varies according to the arrangements made for each edition. The annual celebration is an established event at the temple, and recent reports from January 2026 also documented the temple festival and percussion performances taking place at the premises. The festival provides devotees with an opportunity to participate in worship and experience the continuing ritual traditions associated with this historic temple. Beyond its religious importance, the shrine is notable for its architectural heritage. Kerala Heritage records granite construction in the foundation and walls of the Sreekovil, murals on the plastered walls, stone-carved Dwarapalakas and a copper-covered roof. These features contribute to the temple’s value as a protected cultural monument as well as a functioning place of worship. The combination of its unusual Siva-Narayana tradition, historic architecture and annual festival makes Thirunayathode an important religious and heritage site in the Angamaly region. Visitors attending the Utsavam should respect temple customs and follow the instructions of the temple authorities, particularly during crowded ritual and festival periods. The exact sequence of programmes, performances and special rituals can vary from year to year according to the temple’s festival schedule.
