About this place

The Thirunakkara Arattu is a ten-day annual festival at the historic Thirunakkara Mahadeva Temple in the heart of Kottayam, dedicated to Lord Shiva and celebrated in the Malayalam month of Meenam, generally during March or April. The festival culminates in the ceremonial Arattu, or ritual bathing of the deity, and is noted for its combination of temple rituals, elephant pageantry, percussion music and traditional performing arts. The temple itself is believed to be about 500 years old and was built by the erstwhile Thekkumkoor ruler. Its traditional Kerala-style architecture, colourful murals and Koothambalam, a temple theatre used for cultural performances, contribute to the distinctive character of the festival setting. One of the principal highlights is the Arattu procession, in which nine elaborately decorated elephants form part of the ceremonial pageantry, accompanied by traditional drummers and dancers. The procession proceeds to the temple tank for the ritual bath of Lord Mahadeva, creating one of the most prominent visual moments of the celebration. The festival courtyard also becomes a venue for several traditional art forms. Kathakali performances are held during the festival, particularly through the nights of the third and fourth days, while Velakali, Mayilattom or peacock dance, percussion ensembles and other cultural programmes add variety to the celebrations. The ninth day, known locally as Pakal Pooram, is associated with daytime festivities that include traditional percussion performances, decorated elephants and Kudamattom, the ceremonial exchange of colourful parasols. The festival's programme combines religious observances with cultural traditions that have long been associated with Kerala's temple festivals, drawing devotees and visitors to Kottayam. The temple's murals, architecture and Koothambalam provide an important cultural backdrop, while the performances offer an opportunity to experience traditional Kerala art forms in their customary temple setting. As the festival takes place at an active place of worship, visitors should approach the ceremonies respectfully and follow the temple's regulations and instructions from organisers. The Thirunakkara Arattu is therefore best understood as a religious festival with a strong performing-arts and cultural dimension, bringing together ritual, music, traditional dance, elephant pageantry and community participation in the historic centre of Kottayam.
