DESCRIPTION:Thirunakkara Arattu is the concluding ritual of the ten-day ann
ual festival at Thirunakkara Mahadeva Temple in the heart of Kottayam town
. Dedicated to Lord Shiva\, the historic temple was built in the 16th cent
ury by the Thekkumkoor Raja and is noted for its traditional Kerala archit
ecture\, murals and koothambalam. The annual festival\, known as Phalguna
Utsavam\, is held in the Malayalam month of Meenam\, generally during Marc
h or April\, and culminates in the ceremonial Arattu\, or ritual bathing o
f Lord Mahadeva. The final-day procession is one of the principal attracti
ons of the festival. Kerala Tourism records a procession featuring nine el
aborately caparisoned elephants\, accompanied by drummers\, dancers and ot
her traditional performers\, as the deity is taken to the temple tank for
the Arattu ceremony. The ritual forms the culmination of the festival’s
sequence of worship and public celebrations rather than functioning simply
as a ceremonial parade. The wider festival programme includes traditional
percussion\, Kathakali\, Velakali and Mayilattom\, along with other cultu
ral activities held in and around the temple grounds. The festival’s nin
th day\, known locally as Pakal Pooram\, is also noted for major public ce
lebrations\, including Panchari and Pandi percussion ensembles\, fireworks
and Kudamattom\, in which decorated parasols are exchanged between groups
of elephants. These performances and processions illustrate the close rel
ationship between ritual worship and Kerala’s…\n\nEvent page: https://
