DESCRIPTION:Theyyam at Madayikkavu\, the sacred grove known as Madayi Kavu 
 or Thiruvar Kadu Bhagavathi Temple in Kannur district\, is an important ex
 pression of the ritual traditions of North Malabar. Dedicated to Goddess K
 ali\, the kavu is associated with a fiery manifestation of the goddess and
  is among the important Theyyam centres of the Madayi region. Kerala Touri
 sm’s Theyyam calendar records several forms performed at Madayikkavu\, i
 ncluding Thiruvar Kaattamma\, Someswari\, Kalaratri\, Vettuva Chekavar\, C
 huzhali Bhagavathy\, Kshetrapalaka and Manjaalamma\, illustrating the dive
 rsity of ritual traditions associated with the shrine. Theyyam\, also know
 n as Kaliyattam\, combines ritual\, dance\, music\, invocation and elabora
 te visual traditions\, with each kolam representing a particular deity\, s
 pirit or legendary figure according to local custom. Performances begin wi
 th rituals such as the thottam\, through which the story\, identity and at
 tributes of the particular Theyyam are invoked. The performer then appears
  in distinctive costume\, facial painting and headgear\, accompanied by tr
 aditional percussion instruments and ritual songs. In the religious unders
 tanding of devotees\, the Theyyam performer becomes the visible embodiment
  of the deity during the ritual\, and people approach the kolam to offer p
 rayers and receive blessings. At Madayikkavu\, the Theyyams are performed 
 around the kottam to the north of the temple\, within a sacred landscape t
