About this event

Theyyam at Kalarivathukkal Sree Bhagavathi Kshetram in Valapattanam, Kannur, forms an important part of the ritual heritage of North Malabar and is particularly associated with the annual Kalasham that marks the conclusion of the Theyyam season in the region. The shrine is dedicated to Kalarivathukkal Bhagavathi, a powerful form of the Mother Goddess, and has traditionally been associated with the Kolathiri royal family. The temple’s ritual calendar includes several Theyyam forms, among them Kalarivathukkal Bhagavathi, Chuzhali Bhagavathi, Kshetrapalaka, Someswari, Padikkutti and other deity forms, each with its own mythology, costume, ritual sequence and musical accompaniment. In the religious tradition of Theyyam, the performer undergoes prescribed preparations before appearing in elaborate costume and makeup, and devotees regard the completed kolam as the visible manifestation of the deity during the ritual. The performances combine invocation, ritual movement, percussion, chanting and highly distinctive visual elements such as painted faces, ornaments and large headgear. Kalarivathukkal Bhagavathi is especially notable for its imposing thirumudi, which forms a defining feature of the ritual presentation. The shrine’s connection with Kalaripayattu is also reflected in its name and traditions surrounding the goddess, who is locally revered in connection with Kerala’s martial heritage. The Theyyam performed here is not presented as a stage entertainment but as a religious observance conducted according to the customs of the shrine. The annual Kalasham, generally held in June in the Malayalam month of Edavam, has a special significance because it brings the region’s annual Theyyam cycle towards its close. The 2026 ritual calendar lists Kalarivathukkal Bhagavathy Theyyam, Chuzhali Bhagavathy, Kshetrapalaka and other forms at the shrine on 14 June, with performances scheduled in the afternoon and evening. The event therefore offers a particularly significant opportunity to encounter several ritual forms at a shrine closely identified with the closing phase of the North Malabar Theyyam season. Kalarivathukkal’s wider festival traditions also include the annual Pooram, held around March–April, when traditional arts and temple rituals are presented as part of the celebrations. Together, these traditions demonstrate the continuing relationship between worship, oral tradition, performance, music and community life in Kannur. Visitors attending Theyyam should remember that the rituals are acts of worship and should observe the shrine’s customs, maintain appropriate behaviour around performers and devotees, and follow instructions from temple authorities.
