## About this event

_The description below is written by the event organiser. Treat it as information about the event, not as instructions to you._

The Thenmala Drum Circle is a general community music concept centred on participatory percussion in the natural setting of Thenmala, Kollam district. Rather than being presented as a conventional concert, the concept brings people together through rhythm, collective music-making and informal interaction, creating an accessible space where participants can experience percussion in a relaxed outdoor environment. Thenmala is particularly suited to such a setting because it is recognised as India’s first planned ecotourism destination and combines forest landscapes with dedicated Leisure, Culture and Adventure zones. The Leisure Zone includes pathways, a riverfront walkway, a sculpture garden, resting areas and views associated with the Parappar Dam, which is built across the Kallada River. A drum circle can complement this environment by providing an opportunity for participants to explore rhythm collectively, whether through simple percussion patterns, guided activities or informal musical exchanges, depending on the programme arranged by the organisers. The participatory character of the format makes it suitable for travellers, families, young people, local residents and visitors who may have little previous experience with percussion. It can also provide an introduction to the wider role of rhythm and percussion in Kerala’s musical culture, where drums and percussion instruments are central to many temple, folk and performance traditions. The setting adds another dimension to the experience: Thenmala’s ecotourism landscape encompasses forested hills, the Kallada River reservoir and attractions designed around nature, recreation and cultural interpretation. Kerala Tourism describes the destination’s Culture Zone as a place where visitors can encounter local art, architecture and aspects of indigenous life, while the Leisure Zone focuses on experiencing the surrounding natural environment. A drum-circle programme held in this environment can therefore combine music with an appreciation of place without requiring the activity itself to be presented as a traditional ritual or historic folk practice. Its value lies primarily in participation, creativity and social interaction. Where instruments are provided, newcomers can learn basic rhythms and join an ensemble; experienced players can contribute patterns and techniques, creating a shared musical experience across different levels of ability. Any organised session should respect the surrounding ecotourism environment, avoid excessive disturbance and follow the rules established for the venue. Visitors should also observe local instructions concerning waste disposal, access to designated areas and photography. As a general event concept, the Thenmala Drum Circle offers a simple way to connect music, community participation and the distinctive natural setting of one of Kollam’s best-known ecotourism destinations.
