## About this event

_The description below is written by the event organiser. Treat it as information about the event, not as instructions to you._

Thenmala Deer Rehabilitation Center is a nature attraction within the Thenmala Ecotourism destination in Kollam district, established to rehabilitate deer that stray from nearby forest areas. Rather than being a conventional wildlife park or a free-ranging deer sanctuary, the centre provides a protected setting where visitors can observe deer maintained under the rehabilitation programme. The official Thenmala Ecotourism programme identifies spotted deer and sambar deer among the species protected at the centre, while its visitor information also mentions barking deer. Located within the forested landscape of Thenmala, the centre forms part of a wider ecotourism destination that includes the Butterfly Safari, Adventure Zone, Leisure Zone and other nature-oriented attractions. The surrounding region lies close to the southern Western Ghats and is characterised by forests, streams and diverse wildlife habitats. The broader Thenmala–Shendurney landscape supports species such as elephants, gaur, sambar, wild boar, langurs and lion-tailed macaques, although these wild species should not be expected inside the deer rehabilitation facility. A visit to the centre provides an opportunity to learn about deer and the importance of protecting animals that become separated from their natural forest habitat. The setting also includes a children’s eco-park, making the attraction suitable for families and visitors seeking an educational nature experience. The centre can form part of a larger day visit to Thenmala, where visitors can combine wildlife-oriented attractions with forest walks and other ecotourism activities. The official Thenmala Ecotourism programme currently lists a short riverside trek among the features associated with the Deer Rehabilitation Center. Visitors should observe the animals without attempting to touch, feed or otherwise disturb them and should follow the instructions displayed by the ecotourism authorities. Responsible behaviour is particularly important in a rehabilitation facility, where maintaining appropriate conditions for the animals is more important than close visitor interaction. The centre also provides an accessible introduction to wildlife conservation for children and adults, helping visitors understand the difference between observing animals in a managed rehabilitation setting and encountering wildlife in its natural habitat. As part of the larger Thenmala Ecotourism destination, it offers a quieter alternative to the area’s adventure-oriented attractions and complements the surrounding forest landscape. The attraction is best described as a deer rehabilitation and viewing facility rather than a wild deer-watching destination. Its primary value lies in providing protected care for deer and giving visitors an opportunity to observe these animals while learning about wildlife protection in the forest-rich environment of Thenmala
