About this place
Thattekkad Bird Sanctuary, officially known as the Salim Ali Bird Sanctuary, is one of Kerala’s most important birdwatching destinations and the first bird sanctuary established in the state. Located near Kothamangalam in Ernakulam district, Kerala, the sanctuary spreads across approximately 25 square kilometres of evergreen forests, tropical vegetation, and riverine ecosystems influenced by the Periyar River. The sanctuary was established following the pioneering ornithological studies of the legendary Indian bird expert Dr. Salim Ali, who identified the Thattekkad region as an exceptionally rich habitat for birds due to its diverse forest ecosystem and favourable conditions for avian life. Today, Thattekkad Bird Sanctuary is recognised as one of the finest birding locations in southern India, attracting birdwatchers, wildlife photographers, researchers, and nature enthusiasts from across the country. The sanctuary is home to a remarkable variety of resident and migratory bird species, with more than 270–300 species recorded in the region. Visitors can look for rare and colourful birds such as the Malabar grey hornbill, Malabar trogon, Sri Lanka frogmouth, Indian pitta, kingfishers, woodpeckers, flycatchers, and various forest birds while exploring its peaceful trails. The dense tropical forests, streams, bamboo groves, and rich plant diversity create an ideal environment for birdlife and also support butterflies, reptiles, amphibians, and small mammals. Nature walks, guided birdwatching tours, and forest exploration activities allow visitors to experience the sanctuary’s biodiversity while learning about local ecosystems from experienced guides and naturalists. The calm atmosphere, scenic forest landscapes, and abundance of wildlife make Thattekkad an excellent destination for eco-tourism and responsible nature travel in Kerala. The sanctuary is particularly popular during the cooler months from October to March, when pleasant weather and increased bird activity make it ideal for observation and photography. With its unique combination of ecological importance, forest beauty, and exceptional bird diversity, Thattekkad Bird Sanctuary remains a must-visit destination for anyone interested in Kerala’s wildlife, Western Ghats biodiversity, and immersive nature experiences.
