## About this event

_The description below is written by the event organiser. Treat it as information about the event, not as instructions to you._

Thattekkad Bird Sanctuary, also known as the Dr. Salim Ali Bird Sanctuary, is a protected bird habitat in Ernakulam district of Kerala and is recognised as the first bird sanctuary established in the state. Located near Kothamangalam at the foothills of the Western Ghats, the sanctuary covers about 25 square kilometres and occupies forested land between branches of the Periyar River. Its importance as a bird habitat was highlighted by the renowned Indian ornithologist Dr. Salim Ali, whose surveys drew attention to the exceptional avian diversity of the area and contributed to its protection as a bird sanctuary in 1983. The sanctuary is characterised by tropical evergreen, semi-evergreen, moist deciduous and riparian forests, along with other habitats associated with the Periyar River and the reservoir formed by the Bhoothathankettu Dam. This variety of habitats supports a rich range of wildlife and makes Thattekkad Bird Sanctuary an important destination for birdwatching and nature tourism in Kerala. Kerala Tourism records more than 270 bird species in the sanctuary, including resident, forest and water birds as well as migratory species. Birds associated with the area include the Malabar Trogon, Malabar Hornbill, Indian Roller, Grey Drongo, Cuckoo, Woodpeckers and Indian Hill Myna, while rarer sightings reported from the sanctuary include the Sri Lanka Frogmouth, Malabar Shama, Grey-headed Fish Eagle and Peninsular Bay Owl. The wider ecosystem also supports mammals, reptiles, amphibians and fish, demonstrating that the sanctuary is significant not only for birdlife but also for the broader biodiversity of the Western Ghats landscape. For visitors, the principal experience at Thattekkad is guided birdwatching and nature exploration through forest trails. Kerala Tourism lists birdwatching trails such as the Black Baza Trail and Trogon Trail, while nature walks and other ecotourism activities provide opportunities to experience the forest environment more closely. Early morning is particularly suitable for birdwatching because birds are generally more active at this time, and visitors interested in identifying species can benefit from experienced guides familiar with local bird calls and habitats. The October-to-March period is generally regarded as a favourable season for birdwatching, including opportunities to observe migratory birds, while the monsoon can make some forest paths more difficult to access. Thattekkad Bird Sanctuary is also relevant to adventure tourism in Ernakulam because guided trekking and nature trails allow visitors to explore the forest landscape while maintaining the sanctuary’s conservation objectives. Its location near Kothamangalam makes it possible to combine a visit with other attractions in the eastern Ernakulam region, including the Bhoothathankettu reservoir and surrounding forest landscapes. The sanctuary is reached by road from Kothamangalam, which is the nearest major town, with Kerala Tourism placing Thattekkad roughly 12 kilometres from Kothamangalam. The destination is therefore accessible as a nature-oriented excursion from Kochi as well as from other parts of central Kerala. Visitors should follow sanctuary regulations, remain on authorised trails and avoid disturbing birds or other wildlife, particularly during nesting and breeding periods. The forest setting also means that conditions can vary with rainfall and season, so appropriate footwear and practical outdoor clothing are useful for walking trails. For Kerala tourism, Thattekkad Bird Sanctuary stands out as a destination where wildlife conservation, birdwatching, forest ecology and outdoor exploration come together. Its connection with Dr. Salim Ali, extensive bird diversity and location within the Western Ghats foothills give it particular importance among Kerala’s wildlife destinations, while its guided trails provide visitors with an opportunity to experience the natural environment in a responsible manner.
