About this place
The Teak Museum in Nilambur, Malappuram district, is a unique museum dedicated entirely to teak, a tree species with deep historical, economic and ecological connections to Kerala. Established in May 1995 through a collaboration between the Kerala Forest Research Institute (KFRI) and the Kerala Forest Department, the museum operates from the KFRI Sub-Centre campus at Nilambur and is recognised as the first museum in the world devoted exclusively to a single tree species. Its location is particularly significant because Nilambur has a long history of teak cultivation, with plantation activities beginning in the nineteenth century and the historic Conolly’s Plot located nearby. The museum presents the story of teak through historical, aesthetic and scientific exhibits, allowing visitors to understand the tree’s morphology, distribution, cultivation, management, harvesting, timber characteristics, uses and economic importance. Displays include models and representations of notable teak trees, including Kannimara Teak from Parambikulam Wildlife Sanctuary and a life-size replica of the trunk of a large teak tree from the Malayattoor forest region. An extensive root system from a mature teak tree is also displayed at the museum entrance, providing visitors with a striking introduction to the scale and biology of the species. The collection further explores the historical uses of teak in shipbuilding, construction and other forms of timber utilisation, while exhibits and information resources explain the development of teak cultivation and scientific forestry in India. A miniature model of a traditional Malabar uru, a wooden sailing vessel, highlights the relationship between teak and the region’s maritime heritage. The museum also houses a library containing literature on teak and a mini auditorium used for audiovisual presentations and educational activities. Beyond its historical displays, the museum contributes to environmental education by explaining teak ecology, sustainable utilisation and forest management. It forms part of Nilambur’s wider ecotourism landscape, which includes the historic Conolly’s Plot, teak plantations, forests and other nature attractions. For students, researchers, forestry enthusiasts, nature lovers and travellers interested in Kerala’s environmental heritage, the Teak Museum provides an informative introduction to one of the region’s most significant tree species. Visitors can combine a museum visit with nearby teak plantations to gain a broader understanding of Nilambur’s long association with forestry. With its specialised collection and educational focus, the Teak Museum offers a distinctive experience that connects botany, history, forestry, commerce and conservation in one of Kerala’s most important teak-growing regions.
