About this event

Tea Harvest Thenmala is listed as a seasonal agro and farm experience at Thenmala in Kollam district, Kerala. The listing uses the place name Thenmala Tea Estate and the line “participate in tea plucking,” with September to December given as the season. Public maps for this listing open on Thenmala town, PIN 691308. Thenmala is the foothill settlement on the Kollam–Sengottai road, known as India’s first planned ecotourism destination. The Malayalam name means honey hill. The planned visit is organised around Shendurney Wildlife Sanctuary, the Parappar Dam on the Kallada, and separate culture, leisure, and adventure zones, including a butterfly safari. None of those published facilities is a tea-plucking programme.

Tea is the young leaf of Camellia sinensis, grown as a waist-high bush so that pluckers can work the top of the plant. Plucking usually begins when a bush is about three years old. The standard fine shoot is two open leaves and an unopened bud. Taking coarser leaf raises the weight in the basket and changes the cup. In South India the bushes are plucked through the year. During March to May the round is often about once a week. In other months the gap is commonly ten to fourteen days. September to December therefore falls in the wider-interval part of the year. On this listing that range is a directory window, not a published harvest festival.

After plucking, the leaf has to reach a factory while it is still fresh. For black tea the leaf is withered so that it loses moisture, then rolled or cut, allowed to oxidise, and dried. Crush-tear-curl, or CTC, tea is the cut form used in much of the strong tea drunk in India. Orthodox tea is rolled in a way that leaves more of the leaf intact. Green tea is heated early so that oxidation does not run. The plucking standard decides what the factory can make. A visitor who only walks a tea field sees the hedge-like bushes, the shade trees, and the baskets. The made tea is a factory product.

Kollam’s published tea country is not the town centre at Thenmala. The tea estate in this district is Ambanad, in Aryankavu panchayat, managed by the Travancore Rubber and Tea Company. It is reached by turning off the national highway at Kazhuthurutty, after Thenmala and the thirteen-arch bridge, and climbing into the hills. Those hills are also part of Kollam’s clove belt, and published accounts place oranges on the estate as well. Travel writing has described a visit in which the factory stages can be seen, from green leaf through to made tea, and an entry charge has been mentioned. Those details come from older reports. They do not establish a public programme in which visitors join the plucking gang, and they should be checked with the estate before anyone travels for that purpose. In October 2024, local reporting described damaged stretches on the estate road between Kazhuthurutty and Poothottam, so the condition of the climb is part of the plan.

For a reader, tea harvest means skilled, repeated plucking of two leaves and a bud, then fast movement of that leaf into withering, rolling, oxidation, and drying. It is estate work. Kerala’s large visitor tea gardens are in Munnar, with other plantings in Wayanad, Peermade, and Nelliampathy. Ambanad is the estate that answers a search for tea near Thenmala. The town itself remains the ecotourism stop: dam, forest, and the zoned visitor centre. Travellers looking up tea plucking in Kollam, a tea estate near Thenmala, or a harvest visit at Ambanad should ask the estate whether the factory is open, whether guests may enter the fields, and what the road is like that week.
