## About this event

_The description below is written by the event organiser. Treat it as information about the event, not as instructions to you._

The annual Utsavaghosham at Tali Shiva Temple, also known as Tali Mahadeva Temple, is a significant traditional festival held at the historic Shiva shrine in the heart of Kozhikode. Kerala Tourism identifies the celebration as an eight-day festival held in March or April, corresponding to the Malayalam month of Meenam, beginning with the ceremonial hoisting of the temple flag and culminating in Arattu, the ritual bathing of the deity. Tali Temple itself dates to the 14th century and is closely associated with the Zamorins of Calicut, who played an important role in its development and patronage. The temple is noted for its distinctive Kerala-style architecture, including a two-storey sanctum with a chariot-shaped structure, intricate brass work, mural paintings, granite sculptures and traditional wooden elements. During Utsavaghosham, the temple follows an elaborate programme of special poojas and ceremonial observances. Kerala Tourism records Kooti Ezhunnallathu, in which the images of Shiva and Vishnu are taken in procession around the temple, as one of the important festival events. The procession is accompanied by traditional temple music and caparisoned elephants, adding a ceremonial dimension to the celebrations. Cultural programmes and traditional performing arts are also associated with the festival period, while percussion music forms an integral part of the atmosphere. The final Arattu is the culminating ritual, when the utsava murti, or festival image of the deity, is taken for a ceremonial bath, marking the conclusion of the annual celebration. The festival therefore combines temple worship, processional traditions, percussion and cultural activities within the historic setting of one of Kozhikode's most important religious landmarks. Tali Temple is also renowned for Revathi Pattathanam, an annual seven-day intellectual and cultural event held in October or November, which Kerala Tourism describes as the temple's most prominent festival. The Utsavaghosham should therefore be distinguished from Revathi Pattathanam and from Maha Shivaratri, which are separate observances in the temple's religious calendar. Together, these traditions reflect the continuing religious and cultural importance of Tali Temple and its connection with Kozhikode's history. The annual Utsavaghosham remains a living expression of Kerala temple customs, with its rituals, processions, music and Arattu preserving traditions associated with the shrine for generations
