## About this event

_The description below is written by the event organiser. Treat it as information about the event, not as instructions to you._

Swathi Sangeetholsavam is an annual Indian classical music festival held at Kuthiramalika Palace in the historic East Fort area of Thiruvananthapuram, celebrating the musical legacy of Maharaja Swathi Thirunal Rama Varma, the former ruler of Travancore and one of Kerala’s best-known royal composers. Swathi Thirunal, who reigned from 1813 to 1846, composed more than 400 works in both Carnatic and Hindustani traditions, with compositions in several languages. The festival provides a dedicated platform for presenting his extensive musical repertoire and brings accomplished musicians and younger performers to the courtyard of the palace he built in the 1840s. Performances feature Swathi Thirunal’s compositions in a range of classical forms and are presented by vocalists and instrumentalists, reflecting the continuing relevance of his music within the Indian classical tradition. The setting adds a distinctive historical dimension to the festival: Kuthiramalika, meaning “Palace of Horses,” is an important example of traditional Kerala architecture and takes its name from the horse figures carved into the palace’s wooden roof structure. The palace stands adjacent to the Sree Padmanabhaswamy Temple and is closely associated with the cultural history of the Travancore royal family. Swathi Sangeetholsavam has become an established part of Thiruvananthapuram’s annual classical-music calendar, with concerts traditionally held in January. Kerala Tourism describes the festival as a commemorative celebration of Swathi Thirunal’s contribution to Indian classical music, while festival organisers state that the programme is devoted to exploring and presenting his Carnatic and Hindustani compositions. The concerts are open to music lovers, and the festival’s emphasis on a single composer’s repertoire gives audiences an opportunity to encounter the breadth of Swathi Thirunal’s musical work across successive performances. Beyond its role as a concert series, the festival contributes to the preservation and continued interpretation of a significant body of Kerala’s musical heritage, connecting the royal history of Travancore with contemporary classical performance. Held within the atmospheric surroundings of Kuthiramalika, Swathi Sangeetholsavam offers a focused celebration of composition, performance and the enduring cultural legacy of Maharaja Swathi Thirunal.
