About this event

St. Mary’s Church Kadumeni is a parish church in Kadumeni, in the East Eleri area of Kasaragod district, belonging to the Archdiocese of Tellicherry. Established in 1956, the parish forms part of the Christian community that developed in the eastern hill regions of Kasaragod during the twentieth century. The church serves as a place of worship and community life for parish families in and around Kadumeni, with its religious activities centred on the liturgical traditions of the Syro-Malabar Catholic community. The annual parish feast, or Thirunal, is an important occasion for community worship and participation. Such celebrations traditionally bring together parishioners and visitors for special Holy Masses, prayers and other liturgical observances associated with the patron saint or Marian dedication of the church. Processions, devotional activities and community gatherings may also form part of the feast programme according to the arrangements made by the parish each year. The celebration reflects the distinctive religious culture of the Christian communities that settled in the hilly areas of northern Kerala and contributed to the social development of the region. Kadumeni itself is situated within a predominantly rural landscape of villages, plantations and agricultural areas, giving the parish feast a close connection with the community life of the surrounding settlements. The church’s history also reflects the wider expansion of Catholic parishes into the eastern parts of Kasaragod during the period of migration from central Kerala. Today, St. Mary’s Church continues to function as both a religious institution and a focal point for parish activities. The annual feast provides an opportunity for families and former residents to come together in prayer and fellowship, while maintaining traditions that have been passed from one generation to another. The precise feast dates, liturgical schedule, procession arrangements and accompanying programmes vary from year to year and are determined by the parish. Visitors attending the celebration should therefore follow the current programme issued by the church and respect the religious character of the premises. Photography, access to particular areas and participation in religious ceremonies may be subject to parish instructions. The feast is best experienced as a local religious observance rather than as a commercial festival, with its principal significance rooted in worship, community participation and the continuing Christian heritage of Kadumeni. The church also forms part of the network of historic and active Christian institutions that contribute to the cultural landscape of Kasaragod’s eastern highlands. For visitors interested in Kerala’s regional religious traditions, the parish and its annual Thirunal offer an opportunity to observe the devotional practices and community life of a long-established Catholic settlement in North Kerala.
