About this event
St. John De Britto Church at Narampady is a Roman Catholic parish on the Badiadka–Mulleria route in Kasaragod district and belongs to the Diocese of Mangalore. The parish was established in 1942, when a chapel was built at Narampady to serve local Catholic families who had previously travelled to Bela for their spiritual needs. The chapel was inaugurated on 15 June 1942, and Rev. Fr. Piad Pinto became its first parish priest. The parish has since developed into an established centre of worship and community life, with regular Holy Mass, sacramental celebrations, catechetical activities and parish ministries. The church is dedicated to St. John de Britto, the Portuguese Jesuit missionary and martyr who worked in South India in the 17th century. The parish history records that a relic and statue of St. John de Britto were later brought from Tiruchirappalli and installed at Narampady, strengthening the connection between the church and its patron saint. The parish community also includes Avila Convent and educational and pastoral institutions that have contributed to local religious and social life. The annual feast is an important occasion in the parish calendar. In 2026, the annual feast was celebrated on 15 April, beginning with a festive Mass at 10 a.m. led by Fr. Stany Pereira together with other priests, with a large gathering of faithful. The parish also observes the major celebrations of the Catholic liturgical year, including Easter, Christmas and the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary, alongside activities organised by parish associations and youth groups. In April 2026, the parish celebrated Confraternity Sunday with Holy Mass, Eucharistic adoration and a procession through Narampady town, illustrating the continuing role of communal religious observances in parish life. The church was ceremonially reopened on 7 June 2026 following renovation, and the occasion also marked the beginning of the 2026–27 catechetical year. Today, St. John De Britto Church remains a place of worship and fellowship for the Catholic community of Narampady and surrounding areas. Its history, devotion to its patron saint, long-standing parish institutions and active community programmes make it a meaningful part of the Christian heritage of northern Kerala. Visitors attending services or parish celebrations are expected to observe the church's religious customs and participate respectfully.
