About this place

St. Francis Church in Fort Kochi is one of India’s oldest European churches and an important monument of Kerala’s colonial and maritime history. Founded by Portuguese Franciscan friars in 1503, the original church was constructed with timber and mud inside the Portuguese fort established at Kochi with the permission of the Cochin ruler. It was rebuilt in masonry and reopened in 1516, and over the following centuries the building passed through Portuguese, Dutch, and British periods, each leaving traces on its history and fabric. The church is particularly renowned for its association with Vasco da Gama, the Portuguese navigator who died in Kochi in 1524 during his third visit to India. He was buried at St. Francis Church, and although his remains were transferred to Lisbon in 1539, his tombstone remains within the church and continues to commemorate his original burial place. The church’s architecture is notable for its simple, dignified character, with a lofty timber-framed, tiled roof, a gabled façade, stepped pinnacles, and an interior featuring an old wooden pulpit, confessional, baptismal platform, and other historic furnishings. Its walls also preserve tombstones associated with Portuguese and Dutch residents, providing tangible evidence of Fort Kochi’s successive European communities. An old Dutch baptism and marriage register, known as the Doop Book, dating from 1751 to 1804, is among the church’s historic records and offers an additional connection to the Dutch period. A cenotaph in the church grounds commemorates Kochi residents who died during the First World War. The church was restored under Dutch rule in the 18th century, became an Anglican church during the British period, and has been administered by the Church of South India since 1949. Today, St. Francis Church remains both a place of worship and a protected heritage monument, forming an important part of Fort Kochi’s historic landscape. Its association with Vasco da Gama, distinctive architecture, surviving colonial-era records, and layers of Portuguese, Dutch, and British history make it a significant destination for understanding Kochi’s role in the maritime encounters that transformed the Malabar Coast.
