DESCRIPTION:Sree Padmanabhaswamy Temple in Thiruvananthapuram is one of Ker
 ala’s most important Vaishnava pilgrimage centres and one of the 108 Div
 ya Desams\, with the principal deity\, Lord Vishnu\, depicted reclining on
  the serpent Anantha. The temple is renowned for its distinctive architect
 ural synthesis of Kerala and Dravidian traditions\, its richly decorated i
 nteriors\, murals and stonework\, and its longstanding connection with the
  former Travancore royal family. The present structure reflects major reno
 vations undertaken during the reign of Maharaja Marthanda Varma in the 18t
 h century\, while the temple’s religious traditions are considerably old
 er. Under the Travancore tradition\, the ruler regarded himself as Padmana
 bha Dasa\, or servant of Lord Padmanabha\, and members of the former royal
  family continue to participate in temple ceremonies in accordance with es
 tablished customs. The temple’s principal annual festivals are Alpashi U
 tsavam and Painkuni Utsavam\, both of which are marked by elaborate ritual
  observances and ceremonial processions. During the Alpashi festival\, the
  deities are taken out on different vahanas during the daily processions\,
  while Utsava Sheeveli\, traditional temple arts and other programmes form
  part of the celebrations. The festival reaches important ritual stages wi
