## About this event

_The description below is written by the event organiser. Treat it as information about the event, not as instructions to you._

Sree Mallikarjuna Temple is one of the oldest and important temples in Kasaragod town, dedicated to Lord Shiva in the form of Mallikarjuna. Located in the heart of Kasaragod near the Taluk Office, the temple has a close association with the Kumbala River, which flows to its south. Kerala Tourism dates the present temple to the seventeenth century and records that it was built by the Ikkeri kings to facilitate worship for warriors brought from Karnataka. The temple complex includes the sreekovil, namaskara mandapam, chuttambalam, valiya-balikkal and surrounding traditional structures, while later renovations have contributed to its present appearance. According to temple legend, the image of Lord Shiva is associated with Arjuna, one of the Pandavas of the Mahabharata. The annual Varshika Mahotsavam is the temple’s principal festival and is traditionally held for five days during Meenam, generally in March or April. The festival combines temple rituals with cultural programmes and is particularly noted for Yakshagana, the traditional dance-drama of the Karnataka and North Malabar cultural region. Kerala Tourism records the final day of the festival as the occasion for Yakshagana, making the performance an important part of the temple’s cultural identity. The temple premises also host other observances, including Vinayaka Chaturthi, which is celebrated annually during August or September. During the festival season, the temple becomes a gathering place for devotees and audiences who come to participate in worship and experience the region’s performing-arts traditions. The connection between Kasaragod’s temples and neighbouring Karnataka is reflected in the cultural presence of Yakshagana, while the temple itself preserves a distinct chapter of the town’s religious history. The site is therefore significant not only as a place of Shiva worship but also as a venue where ritual practice and regional performing traditions continue alongside one another. Its location within Kasaragod town makes it part of the district’s wider cultural landscape, where diverse traditions from Kerala and Karnataka meet. For visitors interested in the religious heritage of northern Kerala, Sree Mallikarjuna Temple provides an opportunity to experience a historic Shiva shrine and, during its annual festival, witness traditional cultural programmes that remain closely connected with the temple’s identity.
